Internal Dem polling: Trump's standing on rise

A leading Democratic group ó Priorities USA ó is warning party leaders they could squander a strong political climate in 2018 if they don't start to emphasize pocketbook issues over loose and unfocused critiques of Donald Trump ...

"While still on track for a successful November, the extent of Democratic gains will be blunted if Democrats do not reengage more aggressively in speaking to the economic and health care priorities of voters," it said ...

Despite its admonishment of the party, Democrats have reason to still be upbeat about the 2018 midterm election, the memo argues. Although its generic ballot edge was just four points, Priorities found that just 35 percent of undecided voters approved of Trump ó compared to 60 percent who disapproved ...

And 51 percent of voters said they want more Democrats elected to Congress this year to be a "check and balance on Trump," compared to 39 percent who want to elect more Republicans to help "Trump pass his policies and programs" ...

1. Net approval rating positive in half as many states as at start of presidency

BY GREG PRICE ON 2/13/18 AT 2:42 PM

After one year in office .. Trump has a positive net approval rating in only 19 U.S. states, half as many as when he first took office ...

While the Republican has seen a slight increase in .. net approval rating over the past .. months, Trump's .. first year .. was widely panned by respondents, Morning Consultís data .. showed.

Last month, Trump had a 44 percent approval and 51 percent disapproval rating among registered voters. Those numbers still represented .. a four-point jump compared to October and November.

But while Trumpís overall numbers may have improved recently, over the past year heís lost support from more than a dozen states ...

5. They will if we aren't smart about it...

...and do dumb things like take a brave stand to shut down the government to protect Dreamers -- only to cave the next day, having accomplished nothing. Looking weak and indecisive isn't going to gain you votes with anyone.

4. "It's the economy, stupid!"

James Carville crafted this as the guiding star for Bill Clinton's successful campaign against George H.W. Bush. That's what Team Clinton focused on.

Basically, running against something doesn't get you votes. People want to hear how you are going to make their lives better. The more we harp on how horrible Trump and the Repugs are (and it is SO much fun to do that!), the less time we have to dedicate toward putting forward our own positive agenda.

6. People get used to chaos and catastrophe

We're a remarkably adaptable species, and we can't count on voters sustaining their disgust for this kleptocracy indefinitely. Democrats have to present a different, positive vision and platform for the future. A lot of people are energized, and important work is being done up and down the political map, from statewide and national concerns down to local elections and issues. Let's make sure we have definite, achievable goals to work for.

9. Priorities USA is a spin-off of the magnificent Obama operation in 08

And was a super PAC in 2012 for Team Blue. These numbers, from them, especially considering how accurate Obama internal polling was proven to be in the Ď12 race while public polls bounced around wildly, indicate that we wonít be taking back the House or the Senate this year. 4 points is probably a 53-47 GOP senate and a 5 or 6 seat house dem pickup. We need 24. Surprising numbers but I learned over the years not to underestimate the stupidity of the American voter ever. Mueller takes Trump down or no one does, unfortunately. Midterms look to be a wash with a HUGE caveat being that PUSA isnít experiencing polling error.
