German Karneval floats--merciless as usual! Some of this year's themes

Trump and his Russian pals ("The Russia Affair" ):
[IMG][/IMG]

Merkel as the black widow who eats and survives all her male rivals. Underneath the bones, it says, "Next, please!"
[IMG][/IMG]

Merkel's feckless rival Martin Schulz, who turns the handle himself as he goes through the meat grinder. The play on words is brilliant. The German for "it's your own fault" is "Selber Schuld." Here, it becomes "Selber Schulz."

British PM May, as she gets a look at her Brexit baby:

And German big agriculture refuses to put an immediate end to the use of powerful bee-killing pesticides:

These were the first five I could find. If I see some more good ones, I will post them later.

3. Bitte sehr!

There may be more later. Downtown Düsseldorf is a madhouse on Rose Monday. I usually find something to do outside of Germany, or stay home (as I am today, since 14 days of constant traveling without a break was enough for me).

9. Wait...

10. These are brilliant! Here in the so-called "Land of Free speech," all of those would be banned.

I've never seen such creativity in an American float parade.

22. CNN-style self-censorship hasn't made it here yet.

Belgium, for example practiced it for years. When violent crimes were committed by Moroccan immigrants, the newspapers were forbidden to report the nationality of the perpetrators. Of course, when the nationality was omitted, it was just as obvious. My Belgian colleagues always referred to violent crimes there as being committed by "the Swedes," since it was not allowed to say Moroccans or Arabs.

In the States, most media outlets handle the extremist right with velvet gloves for fear that rich right wing interests will pressure them with the threat of pulled advertising. In Germany at Karneval time, there is a long tradition of the parade's float makers being allowed full freedom to express their views in no uncertain terms. The people love it, and any government that would want to crack down would not survive the next election.

He is by far the best at this, and is known beyond the borders of Germany for his artistry and his biting humor.

Anybody have a link to a "how-they're-made" type video? These things are incredible! Politically and artistically.

18. Actually, there WAS such a video shown on German TV this afternoon

Jacques Tilly (German, despite the name) was shown in his workshop putting this year's floats together.

There was a brief article in the local Düsseldorf paper, if you can read German: http://www.rp-online.de/nrw/staedte/duesseldorf/karneval/jacques-tilly-frechheit-siegt-zumindest-im-karneval-aid-1.6640726

when you look back at Las Vegas and the guns from last Summer. This video is from an anti-moron Carnival float in Italy.

The once a year release goes back to at least Roman times. But, wow.
