October 1973: Donald Trump and his father, Fred Trump, are accused by the Department of Justice of refusing to rent apartments to African Americans. The case was settled two years later. The Trumps did not admit guilt. From
The Washington Post: "Two former Trump employees ... were quoted in court documents as saying they were told that the company wanted to rent only to 'Jews and Executives' and 'discouraged rental to blacks.'"
March 1978: The DOJ accuses Trump of not living up to the terms of the 1975 settlement and continuing not to rent to African Americans.
May 1989: In a full-page New York Daily News ad, Trump calls for the execution of the Central Park Five, five black and Latino teenagers accused of raping a white woman in Central Park. They were later exonerated based on DNA evidence, but Trump refused to concede their innocence, calling the city's $41 million settlement with them a "disgrace."
1991: A book by John O'Donnell, a former president of Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, quotes Trump complaining about a black accountant: "Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys that wear yarmulkes every day. ... I think that the guy is lazy. And it's probably not his fault, because laziness is a trait in blacks. It really is, I believe that. It's not anything they can control."
