Am I the only one who is sick of hearing about "cultural appropriation?"

Seems like every week you get some whiny ass white people complaining about cultural appropriation. Be it a taco stand or a movie about a nonwhite character, these people give the RW Christians a run for the money in terms of perpetual offense.

Let me give you an example:

10-15 years ago, people of color were clamoring for a non-white Disney main character, princess or otherwise. People wanted to see characters of color in non-stereotypical/servile roles. Fast-forward to Moana and Coco, and it's not the white racists flipping out. It's the white SJW's screaming about "cultural appropriation."

The complaint is that Disney is appropriating Polynesian/Mexican culture to make money. The fact that Disney did a bang up job, including making good faith efforts to reach out to these communities during the design phase, is irrelevant.

In the span of a few years, we've gone from "Media corporations should tell the stories of people from other cultures" to "How dare the media corporation make MONEY telling stories about people from other cultures!"

If you want mega-corporations to tell the stories of minority cultures, the fact that they're going to make a profit of it is just a thing you're going to have to accept. That or go back to the days where the only time a black/Hispanic character appeared was to be magical for some white douche.

I can't imagine why people think us LWers are unreasonable. I'm basically convinced that if today's SJW's were alive when Uhura and Kirk kissed, they'd be more pissed off than the Southern racists.

1. Yes, you are.

by attacking "SJWs", you delegitimize your argument by adopting RW framing.

figure out which team you're on.

2. Lol! Been watching fox news again? SJW's? Really? Aren't you supposed to try NOT to let on

that you are slinging right wing talking points.

Seriously, you need work. Go back to the drawing board, read up on how it's done, and then come back and try it again.

3. SJW is just a derogatory term for social liberal

While I agree that accusing Coco and Moana of exploiting other cultures for profit is ridiculous, I object to the RW slur. I am proud to be a liberal and SJW.

7. I consider liberals and SJW's to be completely different things

Liberal: Actually wants to do good things to help poor and oppressed people.
SJW: Looking for stupid shit to be offended about because it's trendy.

Kinda like how there's a difference between Evangelicals and actual Christians. One wants to force their sociopathic belief system on everyone and outlaw other religions. The other wants to do those things Jesus talked about.

20. Every poster in this thread has informed you that SJW is a derogatory right wing smear of liberals.

You are doubling down because you have made up a different meaning in your head and you're sticking to it.

That's some ridiculous shit right there.

10. I don't particularly care for complaints of cultural appropriation, either.

For those of us who are Americans, appropriation *is* our culture. It's what we do.

But please don't use the sort of pejorative names that conservatives like to use against us. It only reinforces their frames.

14. Pretty much any terminology that doesn't mock people for caring about social justice.

You could simply refer to them as "people". Calling them a name only distracts from the point you were trying to make.

18. How about just "dumbasses", if what you meant in Post 7 is accurate?

And you don't seem to even know what "cultural appropriation" is, if you're irritated more by people whining about movies than at the white "gang" in HBO's "Bangin' In Little Rock" they decided to let famewhore so the documentary didn't seem racist, the pathetic Weeaboo culture that attracted the neckbeards to 4chan to post their alt-right antifeminist crap in /pol and their animated child porn in other forums that's an embarrassment to anyone who actually appreciates Japan's real culture, or white people not formally adopted into tribes and getting authentic training going around as "plastic medicine men".

13. Yeah, pretty much

As a nation of immigrants, every part of our culture is appropriated from somewhere. Used to be that imitation is the best form of flattery.

21. I think that the answer, like most things, is in the middle.

While it's ridiculous to demand white people stop eating tacos because that makes them a racist, it's also wrong to do ignorant portrayals of Native American culture in movies, for example, as well.

I will agree that the Moana thing was really dumb, and was probably more about getting attention than actually caring about the movie. 99.9% of people don't care about garbage like this, and think it's amusing that people fight with each other over it.
