Congress provides the Dreamers with a path to citizenship and further authorizes the President to spend on his proposed border wall every single penny that Mexico donates to the US for that purpose
It's win-win: it helps the Dreamers; it gives the President's brilliant funding proposal a hat-tip; and it respects Republican budget objectives

(50,553 posts)I like the idea he has: Only money the Mexicans provide to Donald can be used to build the "fucken wall." But since Mexico has already stated in no uncertain terms that it will not pay for the fucken wall, then no money can be spent on it.

(53 posts)that this would authorize trump to unilaterally negotiate with mexico without them. Simply put, mexico could end up with a sweat deal that motivates them to finance and build the wall on their side of the fence. The optics would be a republican success if it closes the border and a Trump failure it does not.
If democrats fail to capitalize politically on any possible outcome it will be seen as ineffective weakness. Sorry, it's not enough to block and tackle an issue. They have to own, carry and deliver it before Trump does. Right now people are looking for a personality to represent the democratic field. What they need is a powerful presenter of what, why and who they stand for.

(6,709 posts)in part because NO WAY will trump give them a "sweet deal." He's a zero-sum guy: everybody else has to lose for him to win. And he just has to win.
But I agree that Democrats need to look--and act--strong, which they (always) fail to do.
