Worker thought Trump would save her job. She was wrong.

Carrier plant layoffs: Worker thought Trump would save her job. She was wrong.

by MELANIE BENCOSME, JAKE HELLER and CORKY SIEMASZKO

INDIANAPOLIS — It was raining in Indiana's capital city on the day Renee Elliott and millions of other blue collar Americans stunned the world by helping to elect a Manhattan real estate mogul the 45th president of the United States.

But all Elliott saw that day was sunshine.

As she waited patiently in line to cast her vote, Elliott said she was buoyed by the belief that Donald Trump would make good on his campaign pledge and prevent her job at the Carrier plant — the job that she said allowed her to escape an abusive marriage and live a modest but comfortable life — from being sent to Mexico.

Now, very soon, Elliott will be standing in another line — the unemployment line.

Elliott, 44, was one of the 215 workers at the Indianapolis plant who were given pink slips on Thursday. And to say she is disappointed by Trump would be an understatement.

“We all voted for him,” she said of herself and her Carrier co-workers. “We just thought he was going to protect our jobs. It sounded really good. And then, boom.”

29. God, I wish these people would stop falling for the okie doke. trump is a repug. Repug corporate...

owners are the ones shipping the jobs out of the country.

Think one level below conman promises, please.

Hillary and the Dems were at least advocating for job training, education and the ACA, way more than 6 measly months of healthcare.

This is just why repugs love education cuts—these people don't do critical thinking and thus fall for repug cons everytime — not to mention the other elephant in the room—trump is a white man, not a woman and not a black man.

65. They have serious moral, not just thinking, issues.

Trump is the president they knowingly elected. Every day people are kidnapped into holding camps for just one of many crimes against humanity. The people who voted believing he would "save" their jobs believed he would fulfill other promises also.

75. Yes, except many who voted for him also had other reasons.

And even bigotry for some of them was a very minor note at best. A lot of conservatives just don't want change, they want things the way were, and for them it's far more about resisting the change Democrats promise than it is about racial malice.

Those who voted for him chose to empower him to get what they wanted, but they own it all.

But we should all also worry about how supporting him is changing them.

but the times and the browning country are not the same.

Bigotry is a huge part of it.

84. Yes. But. There's an enormous difference between

hostile bigotry based on belief in the inferiority of others and those without malice who just want to retain something comfortingly normal and, in the case of where they live, of great value to them.

That last is a basic need and impulse of all peoples. Conservatives just tend to have it more.

It's asking way too much to require all people to somehow evolve high above normal human emotions, or be called a bigot for having those emotions. Not just that, but that gives valuable cover for malicious bigots, who love to claim they are mainstream.

I suggest we evaluate based on actions. And right now everyone who voted for Trump took a very bad action and own every bad thing that results. But in working terms it's hugely important to realize why they did what they did, not indulge a mistaken notion that they all grabbed the chance to hurt others.

85. When those who've always had unfair advantage lose it, leveling of the playing field seems unfair...

to them. IMO it's no mistake at all that they opted for a white man again to retake the WH from the AA interloper, and a white, uppity woman certainly would not do.

Downplaying their bigotry is a nice notion but I don't buy it at all.

This OP from ProfessorGAC says it all:

It could be expressed in a nicer way but that is the gist of it and they need to learn the lesson. Everybody who bought into this idiotic claim that Trump would be a "blue collar billionaire" didn't spend 10 minutes to check out his past and didn't care for his vile nature. I understand that they were in a desperate situation and saw him as their only hope but it's still kind of hard to feel sorry for them considering the pain and damage this Administration is and will be causing for many Americans.

1. A person who is considered foolish or stupid. 2. A person with profound intellectual disability having a mental age below three years and generally.

But witnessing the destruction wrought by the person idiots like her voted for, I couldn't bring myself to.

My compassion is for the victims of her vote:

The millions of children who will lose health insurance because Trump and the GOP let CHIP expire

The 800,000 + DREAMERS who will be ripped away from friends, school, work, the land the call home and sent back to countries they don't remember

The millions who will watch their insurance premiums skyrocket because the individual mandate has been repealed

Etc.

All because she allowed herself to be conned by a shyster and cast her vote for the Orange Shithole.

86. What's so bad about being divided though?

There are labels like "Nazi" or "Pedophile" that you don't want to be attached to, and others probably don't want to be attached to, and I don't think we'll find very many people who say it's OK being one or both of these things. But we've got right wingers that the Republican Party courts who think that "Liberal" should be treated the same as those two labels. This is what we're up against.

I'm done negotiating my very beliefs and division is far more preferable to unity with these sick psychos.

As I have correctly noted many times before, they do not want our empathy, our understanding or our outreach. They want our silence, our subjugation, and sometimes our literal deaths.

They are idiots fully invested in their own idiocy, and they will fight tooth and nail to protect their idiocy.

60. Im not impressed with the desperate situation/economic insecurity argument

If that were the basis for his vote, everyone in that situation - or at least most of them - would have voted for Trump. But black voters were in similar if not worse economic situations as these people, but didn’t vote for him, so that clearly wasn’t the basis for their vote - otherwise he’d have one in a landslide with a diverse base of support.

Black voters weren’t fooled by him, but these white people fell for it. Why is that? There must have been something that he was selling that appealed to white people but didn’t impress black folk.

Let’s think for a moment about what that could possibly be ...

Been down that road not once but on three occasions. And each time,it does not sink in until that notice is put in your hand.

The hardest part is telling your fellow Union Members that the next day or next week at this time,or that the Company just filled Bankruptcy and there won't be a payday tomorrow,or check you direct deposit ASAP to make sure you payroll made it to your account.

And you will be accused of being a Company Stooge by some, that is just human nature to lash out at someone when you do not have any control.

The Lady last night did her best not to go Postal. Hope she can continue her positive attirude, but hearing what is the true Job availablity in her area, does not sound good at best. absolute monarch--and a lot of Americans think the president can just make things happen at will. That's one big reason why so many people, including Dems, were always mad at Obama. They didn't understand how the Republicans could (and did) block his attempts to fulfill campaign promises and to improve life for Americans.

Republicans especially, and especially now. For eight years they were told by Fox News and Limbaugh et al. that Obama, and only Obama, was directly at fault for every little bad thing that happened to them. Did you lose your job? Blame Obama. Were you the victim of a crime? Blame Obama. Did the price of [anything] go up? Blame Obama. Did you stub your toe? Blame Obama. And so on, day after day after day.

Bring in a few Democratic candidates for 2018, maybe a heavy hitter or two, and stage a rally in Indianopolis, or Fort Wayne, or Manchester. Remind Hoosier voters of all those grandiose promises Trump made and that they believed. Point out that Trump even selected their former governor to be vice president, just to put the clincher on the con.

Then start talking about Democratic policies, like that health care plan they have that actually covers illnesses and check ups, and doesn't deny coverage for pre-existing conditions.

30. Steyer should make several commercials featuring such folks. Much

progress will be made only when those who voted for Trump talk of being sorry they did so, and why.

I am also saddened here to see that many "Don't Care" or "Have no sympathy" etc. Those thoughts, I believe, describe many on the other side. We should be better than that. IMO

37. This is not a case of her being swindled out of $1000

This is a case of she voted in a beast that has happily allowed millions of children to lose their health insurance, who wants to strip away the meager amount of food assistance people get, who has presided over the biggest upward wealth redistribution in our nation's history.

The beast that wants to rip nearly a million people away from the lives and land they called home and deport them back to countries they don't remember.

She had ZERO sympathy for those who had everything to lose when she filled in that oval next to Dotard Shithole's name so she shouldn't expect any to flow back her way.

38. Yeah, but we're human

She not only screwed herself she helped screw everyone else. I get what you're saying but it's hard to feel sorry for someone who wasn't willing to take 15 minutes to vet Twitler. She believed the lies because they were what she wanted to hear not because there was any factual data to support them. Now the truth is coming out and she still hasn't said she's sorry she voted for him, she's just sorry she didn't get what she wanted.

Voting takes more effort than believing what you want to hear.

Not feeling sorry for her.

42. I feel bad for her.Carrier employees were specifically promised their jobs would stay if he won,IIRC

I think it would take a pretty self-sacrificial person for someone in her position to have voted otherwise. It's not as though she knew she was being lied to... or if she did wonder, it would still be hard to vote against even a 50-50 chance of keeping her job.

I blame Trump, not her, for the lie he told.

46. A 5 minute search on Google would have brought up his history of blatant dishonesty

This is not like he was hiding skeletons in his closet with a squeaky clean persona. His toxic personality was out there for all to see.

He was proud of it for Pete's sake.

On Edit: Don't accept promises from people unless you know they have the means to follow through.

73. The Union head immediately explained that many would still lose their jobs.

He had the exact numbers of those who were in departments/division to be shut down and those were NOT affected by Carrier's commitment to retain some jobs.

The information was out there, he was immediately on news shows and in written newspaper reports, but apparently they chose to either ignore what the Union head said or they chose to not believe it.

Either way, ignorance of the real state of things has hurt them badly, not to mention millions of others.

43. I do not feel sorry for her she has no excuse

She was in a Union and instead she trusted the lying racist orange asshole more than she did her own Union's leadership. I feel for the people there that lost their jobs and had enough sense not to vote for Trump.

Too bad she chose to disbelieve those who were looking out for her and to believe those who are not.

62. Welcome to Fox Nation

Naďve, uncurious people who really don't mean anyone any harm, but were never taught--by their schools, their churches or by reality-- to think critically, who watch Fox Noise every free second they have. They have no idea how the Federal Government works. Therefore, when Trump implies that as president, he will wave a magic wand and save their jobs, they vote for him because he's the only one who dares to tell such lies with a straight face. They distrusted Hillary because she wouldn't tell them the same thing. "Tell me lies, tell me sweet little lies."

They actually believe what they hear on Fox and National Hate Radio because the simple message put out by both requires the least effort and critical analysis. They have enough to worry about just getting the bills paid without taking the time and effort to digest and analyze the news of the day, much less the news of the world. These are the people who are willing to believe Hillary did something really bad at Benghazi, even though they don't understand what. For that matter, they haven't the faintest idea what or where Benghazi is.

64. Sorry she's unemployed, but she made a huge mistake

Plenty of people saw through the Con, and she should take responsibility for her vote. BTW, the bonuses and pay raises started during the Obama Presidency. It was not the tax cut. They told us the tax cut would help keep jobs here, but that was another lie.

And they aren't going to just switch parties. They think that if they get a different Repug in there, then they can still get things fixed.

80. There are many sad things about this situation but.....

the saddest is she shows she has not changed at all. Perhaps she now is mad at Trump, I will give her that, but she is still as selfish as ever. She voted for Trump because he promised to keep her world stable. I do not now see where the curtain is being drawn back and she has discovered every bad thing he is doing to everyone. No, she is sad that her world is crumbling and does not even stop to consider the damage this megalomaniac, she voted into office, is creating for everyone else. It truly has not dawned on her that we are supposed to be one nation, indivisible. No one else's suffering matters but her own. Kind of like Trumpie when he is criticized, no one else matters but him. The only thing she realized is that Trump lied to her and now she is in trouble. She has no empathy and without empathy, you vote the way these folks do. Empathy is not taught to people. You grow, mature, and learn. It is something inside of you. She will never see what she has done and therefore she will never change.

87. I was laid off, twice, while Obama was president.

I never made the connection, never saw the president as being to blame for it.

But, he got my vote for many reasons, not because I thought he would protect one bozo's job.

Presidents don't protect jobs. Unions can. Join. Organize.
