The truth about immigration that no one wants to talk about?

Throughout our history, we have had immigrants come to this country, at the behest of the wealthy capitalists that wanted to exploit them for their labor. Whether it be the Scotch-Irish in the coal mines of Appalachia, the Chinese on the railroads, the Polish in the factories, or the Mexicans in our fields, they have come to this country to work and make a better life and each and every time they have been used and abused by the wealthy in this country for their own purposes and greed.

I guess that I should go back and look at old things that were such certainty stories for decades. I hate fake news. Thanks

4. The more incredible truth is how subsequent generations have risen above those circumstances

And how many children and grandchildren of such immigrants (who were treated so poorly) have become so successful.

In theory, that's part of what makes this country great.

6. I agree.

America is unique in that way. It is those circumstances and difficulties that have created the character of our country. It is primarily that struggle that unites us as a people.

10. True enough

Though now the capitalists have the whole world and the cheap labor in the underdeveloped countries. And the robots.

12. Like I have said for decades; if they REALLY wanted to fix the illegal immigration in Texas they

Would prosecute the people who hire them but it will never happen. The state of Texas
employs thousands who work in construction and state road projects.
All the workers have to do is supply a drivers license and SS # and you can get both at the local flea markets.
I used to keep books for a local millionaire who used illegals in his Big commercial landscaping business and he always looked th other way when they showed up looking for work.

This was decades ago but it still happens.
Most of the state roads (and most construction/building jobs) are built by illegals who work arduously out in the hot sun with very little job security. Pitiful, really. The biggest donors to our Gov. Abbott are in construction.

16. I agree 100%

We tried to crack down on employers a couple of times but there was a backlash from the business community and we gave up. In one state (I forget which one) that had a big meat packing industry, the state decided to crack down. The slaughterhouses simply moved to the state next door which was ruinous for the state trying to enforce the law. It has to be done at the national level.

25. I used to work in the construction biz and saw the same thing

time after time. I guarantee that if the owners would have been prosecuted, it would have ended.
#1 he could abuse them by withholding pay (backcharge him for blah, blah...) and obviously paying lower wages.
#2 he used them as "sub-labor" so held no responsibility to actuallycheck their status, or provide any benifits, all the while growing their bank account.

Undocumented workers also built the homes we live in.

29. How to end the problem in 2 steps

Hiring an illegal immigrant, first offense: $100,000 fine per hire, plus a written warning.

Hiring an illegal immigrant, second offense: $1M fine per hire, then immediate revocation of citizenship followed by deportation

It's broadly similar to how prostitutes face heavy legal penalties, but their customers often escape with minimal repercussion.

Apply the punishment to the one committing the greater crime, and watch the results.

13. this turned out a lot worse because of talk radio

the rich like the cheap labor and use it also to keep overall wages down, but the rove white house used talk radio to use immigrants for the voter suppression legislation and dems ignore talk radio so the republicans just kept going.

dems are deluded thinking anything good can be done with republicans on this issue as long as limbaugh and sons are still deciding what's acceptable or not - the minutemen, the wall, the voter id laws - all products of a a few hundred shitholes on the radio working for billionaire think tanks selling voter suppression and voter fraud fraud and lower wages

all because the left keeps ignoring talk radio

14. And each subsequent generation of immigrants is 'used and abused' by the previous ones...

It isn't just racial, although that is how the current situation is playing out. Look at how many current Hispanic residents view our country's moves on immigration. It is not as evenly angry as we might expect.

IAE, we have a chance here to work to improve how we treat people and it shouldn't be wasted.

15. the flip side of that truth...

...is that greedy capitalists created the conditions in other countries that caused people to want to leave their homes in search of a better life.

22. good article. who benefits from these policies?

it's not even logical at this point. the only benefit is to the egos of racists, who think they have struck some kind of blow for racial purity.

19. One of the stories that I always remember re exploitation of immigrants

comes from my beloved Portland, Oregon.

When we lived there in the early 80s, we visited Pittock Mansion, on a bluff overlooking Portland and the Willamette River. Beautiful.

And the mansion is gorgeous too. It has a lot of beautiful woodwork, which we were told was painted and sanded a number of times in the process of building the place.

Sanded? Not what you might think: it was done by Chinese workers isomg pumice with their bare hands.

Mind boggling.

24. The expoitation class want servants, but they don't want them to vote in their own interests.

If everyone gets a voter, their interests do not dominate, and they have to pay the help more. Things like minimum wages will be fair and people will have health care and retirement security. That's the truth that is being ignored, political power versus democracy.

Australia: $13.5
France: $11
Ireland: $10.4
UK: $10.1
Netherlands: $10.1
Germany: $9.9

Immigrants become citizen and register as Democrats and vote democratic.

That's a prevailing fear among Republicans.

31. This is true for some. But some immigrants came here to exploit also. People

who had no social status could come here and have a built in system where they could exploit slave labor or benefit from the third class situation of black people in the US.
