My obligatory gun post: I hate 'em. At one point I was in possession of two

I took both of them away from people I loved who were expressing suicidal intent. Two separate occasions separated by a decade or so. Two unrelated people. Both "successful" males but with little else in common. The guns are unloaded and now in the hands of responsible people.

This isn't a political post. It's clearly not a case of advocating one way or another on... anything. It's just a story.

Guns give me the creeps. Always have. I suppose they always will. And yes, I've even done some target shooting.

I just don't like them.

Calm your gun loving palpitating little heart: I don't want to take your guns away.

to take experiences like yours just as seriously as paranoid fantasies about a tyrannical government coming for our guns.

At that point, we could at least have a discussion, as opposed to what we have now.

Not liking guns - as your post shows - isn't always the same as wanting to totally abolish the second amandment. Maybe that is a middle ground on which a discussion could be started, one day, when this country has matured a bit.

I don't like being around them. We don't have any in the house. As someone with a huge family predisposition to depression I think of them as just way too convenient in the wrong hands. Dead is hard to undo.

They were my late father-in-law's guns and I keep the handguns mostly for sentimental reasons. I don't even have ammo for them. The shotgun is within reach and so is a two-cartridge clip I can pop in if needed. Where we live, rabid animals are not uncommon. The dogs protect the house, not the shotgun. Should it be necessary, I can have it ready in ten seconds.

I hold a different view but I will not try to convince you that you need a firearm.

My son in law keeps trying to convince me that I should take up sky diving. I tell him that I can't see any reason to jump out of a perfectly good aircraft.

People differ.

You don't like them and don't have any. I do like them and have a hundred of them.

To each their own!
