Trump-Appointed USPS Postmaster General Draws Republican Rebuke

Source: Newsweek

Published May 10, 2024 at 8:06 PM EDT

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump during his last year in office, is receiving rare backlash from Republican lawmakers for his handling of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS).

A group of 26 U.S. senators, including 13 Republicans representing states with large rural areas, sent DeJoy a letter this week demanding that he works to "improve service immediately" and "restore status quo operations as much as practicable" in locations where his cost-cutting measures have resulted in significant delivery delays.

The senators argued that areas where USPS service has recently been changed under DeJoy's "Delivering for America" initiative have suffered "critical delays for mail that requires overnight delivery," with the possibility of on-time deliveries "for critical mail like medications and laboratory tests" having been "eliminated" in some areas.

Senators expressed skepticism that DeJoy's plan would improve "efficiency or costs" overall, while warning that "local and rural service could be degraded" by measures like requiring outgoing mail to sometimes be processed at hubs that are out of state.

the least they need is for the assassin to put down his gun and either walk away, or surrender.

It took 2 weeks to get there. It sat in a mail depot in Memphis Tn for most of the time. I was on the verge of putting a stop payment on the check and sending another. I went to the local PO but they really could not help me. It finally arrived in Charlotte 2 weeks after I sent it. It's a 5 hour drive up 95 from Jacksonville Fl, to Charlotte NC. It took 2 weeks. I still don't understand why it was diverted to Memphis.

The mail personnel in my local PO and all my mail delivery folks are super. But there is definitely something amiss in the overall US Mail Operation.

Not pretty, but functional and easy to navigate. Create an online profile like you'd do anywhere else, then add a bank account from which you can arrange payments and receive refunds.

I pay my quarterlies online and most years, my return's amount due. Easy to get PDFs of everything I do, which is really the best part, a useful audit trail that I can reference anytime.

It is a vital service that must be protected. Yes, Dems use some online services, but we also use our post office as the vital service that it is. Some people don't want to use online bill pay and expose their bank account. I continue to use the U.S. mail for most of my bills payments.

Before DeJoy, the mail ran smoothly and would get cross country in 5 days or less. Now it lakes 5 days to go from one end of the county to the other.

Republicans want to make the post office run so badly that nobody wants to use it, and/or would not care if it was privatized.

Priority Mail is normally delivered in 2 days, or 3 at the most. You get a tracking number as part of the service too. Anytime I need to send something important or urgent, I use Priority Mail and it has never let me down. Even DeJoy can't mess that up.

Being a manufacturing process engineer, I can assure you that the new equipment replacements were completely done in reverse.

Dejoy had the old sorting machines removed before the new sorting machines were even ready to be installed. Here in Houston it was a nightmare.

When the new sorting machines finally showed up, they did not fit in the old sorting plant. Stupid is not the word. This was malicious.

No process engineer worth their salt would REMOVE a functioning line before the new equipment is ready to go live.

The whole reason for it's existence is to serve the people, not make profits.
Rural areas need this a lot more than the cities and suburbs, and yet DeJoy simply doesn't get this fundamental concept.
We need a postal service that can be relied on to deliver time sensitive mail and packages as quickly as they used to before this guy began the process of dismantling it.
If the government has to pay more to get the job done, then so be it.

rural areas are being hit hard. I went without any mail for 2 days and at the post office I asked about it. The nice Magat lady said the post office hasn't gotten any mail, it all came in today. I thought I would give her a jab and said, maybe I should write a nasty letter to DeJoy. She answered, he isn't doing us any good.

Even the Magats don't like DeJoy and yet we can't get his ass removed.

In a seeming panic, mail of ALL types is being sent to centers all over. Rochester NY, ye that's right. We received SOME of the disaster. Maybe hundred of thousands letters, some unprocessed, some ALREADY processed and labeled(for Atlanta and other cities nearby, a great deal of reruns which would only go to one or two bins on our schemes, collection mail, manual mail, even mail we had proceed and sent to them. Oh we did the unbarcoded election notification card- which were processed twice to to a couple of trays. All that arrived too late to be done the day before. Late and scandalously disorganized. This just to get the heat off or spread the blame???

I thought a tornado had hit the center or ....what? Oh yes, DeJoy and other incompetents who couldn't even break down containers for rational delivery. No supervisor, expediter or whatever who let this truck flotilla bounce around the country should be spared, but DeJoy and his supercenter dreamchild he bulldozed in???

It can't be a Dem due to regs re number of members from one party, but maybe an Independent who would not support DeJoy? I said most Dems view DeJoy as greasing the skids for USPS privatization and that he would no doubt personally benefit from this. He's got to go.

Palmetto, Ga. — U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is demanding answers from the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) on reported mail delays at the processing and distribution center in Palmetto.

Sen. Ossoff today launched an inquiry with USPS Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to provide detailed answers and explanation amid growing reportsThis is an external link
of missing and delayed mail processed through the Atlanta Regional Processing and Distribution Center — impacting families’ ability to get life-saving medicine and vital mail services.

“I write to express concern regarding numerous reports of missing and delayed mail in the metro Atlanta area, reportedly connected to the Atlanta Regional Processing and Distribution Center in Palmetto. Postal customers in Georgia are increasingly reporting untraceable or stalled packages to local news outlets, in some cases for up to weeks,” Sen. Ossoff wrote. “The timely delivery of mail across the nation is a vital public service. I urge you to expeditiously investigate the reported delays across the metro Atlanta area and to take any necessary and appropriate actions to ameliorate any issues.”
