JUST IN: Three Americans are accused of being involved in a failed coup attempt in Congo that left multiple people dead.

I admit--I know nothing about what is going on in the Congo.

JUST IN: Three Americans are accused of being involved in a failed coup attempt in Congo that left multiple people dead.

According to the Democratic Republic of Congo military, they stopped an attempted coup near the presidential palace.

Among the 50 people who were involved were three Americans who have been arrested.

A passport for one of these Americans is now spreading online, a 36-year-old U.S. citizen born in Maryland. (WaPo)

US ambassador to Congo, Lucy Tamlyn has acknowledged the involvement of US citizens in a recent statement.

The coup was allegedly led by US-based Congolese politician Christian Malanga.

He was killed at the presidential palace after he resisted arrest

A fringe Congolese politician and his United States business partner in mining and cannabis ventures in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Mozambique apparently led a foiled coup in the early hours of Sunday.

Christian Malanga, 41, leader of the US-based United Congolese Party, was killed as his band of 20 armed men reportedly tried to force entry into the Palais de la Nation, the complex that is home to President Felix Tshisekedi's government.

Malanga's right-hand man was Benjamin Zalman-Polun from Maryland (US) identified in earlier reports as an American cannabis entrepreneur.

Both Malanga and Zalman-Polun were partners in mining ventures and the fast-growing electronic cigarette liquids sector.

In 1993, Malanga's family relocated to Swaziland as political refugees. Malanga went to primary school at Saint Paul's Methodist Primary School in Swaziland. In 1998, Malanga moved to Salt Lake City, Utah in the United States as a political refugee with asylum status. There he owned several small businesses until 2006, when he cofounded the DRC non-profit Africa Helpline Society.[4] He worked directly with children at the on-site orphanage and with the organization's global outreach initiatives. Malanga used his experiences to simultaneously form his own non-governmental organization, Friends of America, during this time period

In June 2006, Malanga returned to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to participate in military service, and in 2007 he achieved the rank of captain in the Congolese Military. His principal duties during service included brigade morale officer and command of a training company with responsibility for approximately 235 men under his command

Malanga was quite young and was a refugee in the US. Sounds like he had support of some of his US "friends".
