CA-SEN: Former rivals Lee, Porter throw support behind Schiff in California

Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) on Wednesday joined Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) in officially endorsing Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) for the Senate seat they all three sought.

Schiff will face former baseball star Steve Garvey, a Republican, in the general election, after they emerged as the top two vote-getters in the state’s nonpartisan primary in March.

“Californians have a clear choice this November in who they want representing them in the Senate — a Trump apologist or a defender of democracy,” Lee said in a Wednesday statement. “Now more than ever, we need to elect people like Adam Schiff, who will stand up against the autocrats looking to divide this country and dismantle our democracy.”

“For decades in Congress, I’ve worked alongside Adam to deliver for Californians. I’m honored to endorse him for the United States Senate,” she added.

Those were very kind, flattering and supportive words. It's quite a change from the previously scowled comments about the primary being "rigged" (obviously false, but where have we heard that before?) Sadly, those type of bitter and angry sentiments only serve to make people question the legitimacy of our election process, which will suppress the vote --- and that plays into a scenario that benefits the GOP candidate (and ultimately Trump.)

Frankly, I'd hoped this endorsement would happen sooner rather than later. Maybe they were busy writing a book. After all, we know the possible and likely consequences when popular runner-ups fail to make an earnest and full-throated effort to switch-gears and guide their primary supporters toward supporting the actual primary winner and party's nominee. So in that regard, I concede that being tardy is better than never showing party unity at all.
