Former President Donald Trump misstated the age of his youngest son in an interview that aired Thursday, saying Barron Trump was 17 years old even though he turned 18 in March.
The mistake came when Trump reacted to his son's entering the political arena as a delegate from Florida for the Republican National Convention, which was first reported by NBC News.
"Hes pretty young, I will say. Hes 17," Trump said in an interview with Telemundo 51 of Miami. "But if they can do that, Im all for it."

(51,896 posts)How could Trump have overlooked this milestone? It is mind-boggling.
When my son turned 18 I had a talk with him about how he is now different in the eyes of the law, and faces much bigger consequences for his actions, because he is now an adult. But Trump doesn't think laws apply to him or his family.

(34,161 posts)Most states have an age of consent under 18, and others have Romeo and Juliet laws, creating exceptions to statutory rape laws for similarly aged teens.
Also, many states don't wait until 18 to make statutory rape a crime. Some have a fixed lower age (e.g. 16). Others base it on age difference (e.g. 3 years). Still others use a combination (at least X years old at least Y years older than the victim)
SunSeeker
(51,896 posts)Of course every state has different minor exceptions, and you can certainly point out what they are, but to stay safe no matter what state you're in, once you turn 18, don't mess with anyone under 18.
Ms. Toad
(34,161 posts)They are not minor exceptions - and, as a general rule, they cover the 18/17 couple you suggested would not be covered.
AND if you wait until your son is 18, you are too late, in many states. Statutory rape laws cover individual "perpetrators" as young as 16 in some states.
The only safe rule is to know what the law is in your state, not count on generalities like if you are over 18 you can't have sex with your 17 year old girlfriends OR that you didn't have to worry until you turn 18. The law is far more complicated than you imagine.
SunSeeker
(51,896 posts)That's what we're talking about here.
Yes, there are states where a 17 year old can get in trouble for having sex with a 16 year old. That's not what we're talking about here, Counselor Toad.
EVERY state makes it illegal for adults (18 year olds and up) to have sex with minors (less than 18), with very limited exceptions (such as an emancipated minor who gets married to an adult). As a general rule, 18 year olds can't have sex with minors. That is an important rule to impart to your 18 year old.
Of course there is a SHITLOAD of other things/laws/biology/life advice to tell your child well before he or she reaches 18. That's not what we're talking about here.
Ms. Toad
(34,161 posts)As of 2022 (the most recent summary I could find quickly) 18 is the age of consent in only 11 states, not all 50. In all other states the age of consent is lower (generally 16 or 17). So in the majority of states a 17 year old can consent to sexual intercourse; in many a 16 year old can consent to sexual intercourse. Statutory rape occurs when one party is below the age of consent (not when one party is under 18).
Romeo and Juliet laws (which 19 states have) create exceptions to statutory rape laws for sexual relationships between two individuals close in age (Generally 2-4 years), even if one member of the couple is over the age of consent and the other below.
Neither the age of consent, nor the Romeo and Juliet laws have anything to do with emancipation or marriage, nor are they limited exceptions.
SunSeeker
(51,896 posts)That is the simplest rule to give your 18 year old so they stay safe from statutory rape charges no matter what state they're in. An adult who follows the rule to not have sex with anyone under 18 will stay safe from statutory rape laws in all 50 states.
You obviously disagree with that advice, or don't seem to understand what I'm saying. So be it. I can live with that. What's important to me is keeping my 18+ year old out of trouble.
Ms. Toad
(34,161 posts)It is that the advice is legally incorrect. You have repeatedly started that, in all states, it is illegal for 18 year olds to have sex with minors. That is flat out legally incorrect in 39 states.
And, if you really want to keep your child safe from statutory rape charges, you need to know what the law is in your state. Because waiting to give them this advice until they are 18 (or telling them they didn't have to worry about it until they are 18 as your first post implied) can also leave them wide open for statutory rape charges.
We're the party that is supposed to care about facts and accuracy.

So instead of really attending (I'm sure he'll stop by), he's got campaign fundraisers lines up.
Was busy fucking a porn star when Baron was a baby. Is busy trying to fuck the country when Baron is becoming an adult.
