(73,723 posts)watching some UFC. Tough, talented fighters. And there has been a little cross-over between the sports. I've been involved in boxing for 60+ years now, in everything other than promoting. So that's the one I'm qualified to talk about, though I'd enjoy reading opinions on MMA.

(7,655 posts)MMA is a mere babe by comparison but it sure put a lot of Kung Fu and Karate hocus pocus in the trash can where it belongs.
Yeah, but Boxing
The way Mike Tyson came along and just blew through the ranks in the 80s was a sight to behold. That peek a boo style had guys much bigger than Tyson flabbergasted. For awhile there anyway. I still enjoy going back through the tape, watching what happened and listening to guys who know a whole lot more than I dissect it.
Fascinating.

(73,723 posts)signed Mike over to Cus D'Amato. I remember him saying that he had a heavyweight with Patterson's speed and delivery, with Liston's power.
Two of our friend's son were among amateur fighters I trained. They were both undefeated when I was in their corner. (One lost a decision when I wasn't there.)

(7,655 posts)Impressive too.
Yeah, Sonny Liston
that whole deal with the invisible punch allegedly thrown by Clay and his downhill run, strange and sad. The manner of his death I know was quite suspicious.
Lot of crazy suspicions things happened in boxing like many sports.
Hey, I dont suppose you were ever a Water Boy at one point were you? I mean, technically I guess you were a boy at one point H man, but you know

(73,723 posts)Mainly amateur, one pro card. I was featured in an article in Boxing Illustrated as a young teen. Served as referee and judge.later. Trained amateur & pro fighters for many years. Every amateur I trained from 1975 until 2020 won at least one Golden Gloves title. And as their chief cornerman, I did indeed control the water bottle!

(7,655 posts)That truly is amazing! You were definitely doing something right and totally repeatable in your training routine. I mean, you can get lucky and run into some natural talent at times I imagine but 45 year's, wow.
I wish Id have had at least some rudimentary training at boxing back in say, junior high. Just because I embarrassed his tough guys friend during wrestling in phys ed, this scrapper taps me on the shoulder and as I turn, sucker punches me. Now while I could have wrestled his $&! ass to the ground and pummeled him into something resembling crushed tomatoes, it would have been more elegant to beat him at his own game. Hes just lucky I didnt want to get suspended for fighting.

(73,723 posts)a few guys who had beat me in high school wrestling. Two great sports! I was training for boxing when I had my last wrestling match. My opponent shot in for a takedown, and by instinct I landed a perfect right cross, stretching him out. Everyone booed, as they well should have -- including my coach & team. On the bus ride back, the coach told me to not bother coming back to practice any more. I understood why, though I still hold that my effort proved that Ali did indeed deck Liston with a hard punch in their second fight.

(101,438 posts)The Sports group is overwhelmingly discussion about professional sports (similar to Music Appreciation - both are often in groups of fans). Cooking/Baking on the other hand is mostly about what to cook (which will usually be for more than one diner), rather than TV or web cooking programs.

This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
