Pakistan says U.S. drones in its air space will be shot down
ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan will shoot down any U.S. drone that intrudes its air space per new directives, a senior Pakistani official told NBC News on Saturday. Pakistani security personnel examine a crashed US surveillance drone inside Pakistan in August. According to the new Pakistani defense policy, "Any object entering into our air space, including U.S. drones, will be treated as hostile and be shot down," a senior Pakistani military official told NBC News. The policy change comes just weeks after a deadly NATO attack on Pakistani military checkpoints accidentally killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, prompting Pakistani officials to order all U.S. personnel out of a remote airfield in Pakistan. Pakistan told the U.S. to vacate Shamsi Air Base by December 11.

Hemophilia B, which was carried by Queen Victoria and affected most of the royal houses of Europe, is the first well-known disease to appear treatable by gene therapy, a technique with a 20-year record of almost unbroken failure. “I think

Free childcare would raise millions in tax on working mums, says thinktank
57 minutes ago · Free nursery care would raise millions of pounds for the government by enabling mothers to return to work, according to a report by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR). The thinktank says the increased tax revenues that would result would outstrip the cost of providing care for all pre-school children. Many women, especially those on low to middle incomes, stop work after having children because of the high cost of childcare in the UK. In the 34 developed nations that make up the

1 hour ago · Sky watchers in Western Canada had an opportunity to observe a total lunar eclipse early Saturday morning — for the last time until 2014. According to NASA, the peak of the eclipse, when the moon will appear red or orange, took place at 6:30 a.m. PT. That was roughly 1½ hours before the sun was scheduled to rise and the moon was scheduled to set in Vancouver. (...) The t

Sanders explained how Citizens United has legalized the takeover of our government by a handful of conservative billionaires, “Here’s what it is. Nick Clegg attacks David Cameron over European veto
2 hours ago · Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has launched an attack on David Cameron for isolating the UK in Europe with his veto of changes to the EU treaty. Sources close to the Liberal Democrat leader said he felt the failed negotiations over the eurozone crisis had left the UK Europe's "lonely man". It now looks likely that all 26 other members of the European Union will agree to a new "accord" setting out tougher budget rules aimed at preventing a repeat of the current eurozone crisis. The In

Truth about laughing prisoner who wanted to look her best to be shot
2 hours ago · At her trial Xiuling had pleaded to the judge: ‘Please give me a second chance to live. I want to live. Dec 10 · Thank you to everyone who participated in our public beta test of DU3. The testing site is now closed. We are currently in the process of importing members' current user data into the DU3 software. After the user data has been transferred over, we will remove the DU3 software from the /du3/ sub-folder, and move it to the top-level democraticunderground.com URL. The entire process may take a few hours. When the process is finished, our new software will be live. We will probably leave t

Dec 09 · As the ruling class of this country continue to scratch their heads in public about the Occupy Wall Street movement, most of us regular folks had seen this movement coming for sometime now. Young Americans have joined OWS, not just because there is a high unemployment rate in this country, and not just because they go from one job interview to the next, practically losing the ability to feel the disappointment of yet another rejection. No, they joined the OWS movement because they are losing ho

Dec 10 · It's a good post to use as this format of DU draws to a close. It shows just how ridiculously ridiculous things have become in education.....and how very clueless our party's leaders have become. Yeh, I said it, I mean it. They are clueless to the great harm they are doing daily to public education in America. They have no idea, and I wonder if they even care. Yeh, I mean that also. Francis W. “Frank” Biden, a younger brother of Vice President Joe Biden, is a real estate developer in

Dec 10 · You may be aware that we are going to be moving into new software very soon -- probably tonight. And on that software, the community is going to be moderated very differently than DU has been moderated over the last decade. Our reasons for making this change are many. But I want to make clear that the change should not in any way be interpreted as some sort of statement about the people who have served as moderators on Democratic Underground over the last 10 years. Probably hundreds of differ

Dec 09 · One school in this system of charter schools sent over 12% of its 2009-2010 class back to the public school district. Two others dismissed 5% and 7% of their student enrollment. So there you have it...one set of schools getting taxpayer money gets to pick and choose their students, the traditional public schools don't get that luxury. If schools get public money, they should keep the students and work with them. And so they get puff articles written about how very good they are, with

Dec 09 · We've got quite a few awards to hand out this week, so we're going to just quickly note two events from the past week, and move right along. Oh, and as for this week's article title, well, it just felt appropriate, somehow. I promise, by the end, we'll have at least one blatant Alice In Wonderland reference to justify it, OK? The week dawned with the exit of Herman Cain from the Republican nomination battle. Cain, love him or hate him, will be missed on the campaign trail because he had tw

Dec 09 · That comment stunned me as I exited my local supermarket earlier this afternoon. I turned, and there sitting as if everything was great on this sunny day, reading a newspaper like they belonged, was a young couple. First glance, well dressed, not dirty, no 'meth marks' on their faces. Neither smoking. He shaggy blond hair sticking out from under a ski cap, her dark hair under a hoodie. Nice coats, nice boots on both. "Is it for food or drugs and booze?" No sir (huh, sir, are you shitt

Dec 08 · The current President and Congress are destroying our Constitutional rights, our planet's climate, and the vestiges of a social safety net, and you are obsessing over a freak show of self-hating homosexuals and anti-intellectual intellectuals jumping through hoops in a corporate media circus with Ringmaster Donald Trump. Is this a good use of your time? The "Bush tax cuts" are still called that, while Bush has been gone for years. The corporate trade agreements are rolling through at a pace B

Dec 08 · Earlene had a bachelor’s degree. She did white collar office work all her life. At 50, she suffered a stroke which left her paralyzed----on her left side. Dec 08 · Cleansing Wall Street of Blame: "By Imbeciles Who Really Mean It": Lost Verities and Dirty Hippies By Phil Rockstroh / Editor's Note: The Right’s giant megaphone is reversing the narrative for today’s crisis: It is Barack Obama’s “food-stamp presidency” and the Occupy demands for fairness that are at fault for the hard economic times, not Wall Street’s unregulated greed increasing the need for food stamps and heightening the imperative for resistance – as Phil Rockstroh explains: R

Dec 08 · Living with Fukushima City's radiation problem Blogpost by Ike Teuling - December 8, 2011 at 15:27 We spent four days in Fukushima City doing a radiation survey in the neighbourhoods of Watari and Onami.
