Wellstone Memorial a campaign rally
Wellstone Memorial a campaign rally
Wednesday, October 30, 2002 Posted: 3:54 AM EST (0854 GMT)

<snip>
MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (CNN) -- Fierce passion, cheers and praise for lives lost filled the basketball arena where thousands came Tuesday night to remember Sen. Paul Wellstone, D-Minnesota, and those who died with him in a plane crash last week.

At times the memorial sounded like a campaign rally, with friends and family urging voters to continue the legacy of an outspoken liberal who died in the last days of a difficult re-election fight. Wellstone's trademark resolve and love for his state shone through in the eulogies given by his friends and family.

Frankly, I was appalled. This was supposed to be a memorial service. Instead, it tuned into a combination pep-rally/circus!!!
What a disgrace to the memory of Mr. Wellstone!

It was a worthy celebration of a life well lived!

- Or is this how the RRWing labels it for their OWN political gain?

- BTW...did you see the expression on Lott's face? He looked downright scared knowing he was surrounded by LIBERALS that want HIM out of politics.

48. You may be right
...but somehow I get the idea that asking for votes and trying to convince Republicans to vote for Mondale is a little off the track of trying to celebrate a well lived life.

51. Tell me, born2talk -
Did you even watch the memorial?

How do you suggest memorializing Paul without memorializing that which was his passion - activism and the political process?

You're not off to an auspicious start here, newbie.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-30-02 AT 09:48 AM (ET)

The memorial was not a political rally for Walter Mondale. It was a celebration of the life and legacy of Paul Wellstone. Yes the man was (gasp!) a liberal and he lived his life fighting for the equality for all. That's what was being celebrated; his humanity. Where rethugs talk of their compassion and humanity, here you have an individual worthy of such accolades. You self-righteous moralizing types will never get it.
I never thought that I would get to be the creature that I always meant to be.

I thought it was beautiful! Glad you saw it. It must have scared the hell out of repugs in the arena, because they knew they were going down in a big way Nov 5th!

I would have wanted them to be saying "We're gonna kick some Republican butt!" instead of just sobbing. From what I hear of the late Senator, he would have wanted it that way, too. He was a fighter.

What a disgrace to the memory of Mr. Wellstone!

I think that Paul's advice at a time such as this would have been, "Don't mourn... ORGANIZE!" The service, for the most part, showed his fighting spirit. It was a celebration of the man and what he stood for, rather than a mournful gathering. And with Paul Wellstone's life... there was much to celebrate.

46. Beautifully put Chris. I couldn't have said it better....
The GOP and their flaky press corps have their talking points down pat. I turned on CNN when I awoke this morning and what did I hear? Anchor, Carol Costello saying pretty the same thing that I've been hearing all morning from republicans. They all went to Drudge and got their talking points, apparently.

Who are these people to judge what was appropriate for Paul Wellstone. They say it was "political." Well, duh. Wellstone was a politician. How can you remember him without invoking politics?
He was a good man who did...uh....good things???? Hell no! Paul deserves better than that.

A person who isn't celebrated like Wellstone probably didn't lead as good a life as Wellstone did. Wellstone was properly celebrated in accordance with the life HE lived. Not the life of anyone else but his.

7. It's really not so unusual
My father is an ordained minister who performs many funerals and they call them "going home services". They sing and celebrate the life, as well as mourn the death. Some might find that inappropriate, but they don't.

The Wellstone thing last night wasn't even a funeral, it was a memorial service. Although I may not have found every second of the memorial to my liking, it isn't my service. Honor the life, continue the work as there is a void to fill. Often these memorial services are used as a way to rally around continuing the deceased work. Athletes are well known for this. I have heard "He would want us to go on and win", more often than I can count.

So lighten up, quit being offended and do like I did, turn it off when you don't like something. The majority of objections I have heard have been from Republicans who think this was a commercial for Democrats and a disadvantage to them. Trust me, no one is looking to die to gain an advantage politically.

Pauls life WAS service to his fellow man which he channeled into politics. They cannot be separated.
