Our civilization is made up of people from all walks of life, and the interactions that we make with each other adds up to the sum total experience of our life. Tragedy is a total experience. There is a phenomenon in psychology called the shutter effect: when something hugely historical takes place, we imprint a picture of it in our minds, a picture that we never lose. Each of us will remember 10, 20, 50 years from now where we were and what we were doing the second we found out about the tragedy of September 11th, and I know I won't forget what I was doing when I heard about the breakup of the Columbia shuttle.
As one freeper put it: the shuttle is just a thing with stubby wings: what we lost today is the crew.
We all, without political viewpoints or petty arguments, share in the tragedy that happened this morning, and all send their thoughts and prayers to the crewmembers and their families.
