... what you might define as "getting bad", but I do believe a war on Iraq would spur, not deter, terrorist attacks on domestic soil. Most vulnerable would be food and water supplies, plus energy and transportation systems. Assuming that such attacks would result in disruptions lasting for weeks if not months, we've done the following at our home:Installed a water collection system (basically some nifty rain barrels which draw water from the downspouts of the house) and will install a solar water distiller to purify said water for drinking.
Organized and keep a well-stocked pantry, which includes (at all times) at least 50 gallons of bottled water. This also includes extra prescription medicines and plenty of extra dry food for pets.
Have an emergency stock of batteries, candles, first aid kits, sleeping bags et al organized and kept in a specified room in the basement. Grab n' go bags are also kept here.
Had the fireplace checked and cleaned, plus purchased a campstove.
Even though we have a relatively modest yard, it is sufficient to grow enough food to supplement our needs. With that in mind, we obtained a composter and have prepared a good portion of our available space for gardens. We've also purchased canning supplies and several books on growing and preserving food.
Purchased a good radio and lamp which run on solar and/or crank power.
Anyway, these are some of the steps we've taken to prepare for any emergency situation that might arise. In this country we're so used to all our needs being available at our fingertips I don't think most folks realize the havoc that could result from a disruption of power, food and water supplies... even if said emergency lasted for a only few weeks.
Hopefully we'll all be able to survive even the worst mess the Bushreich can create and in the meanwhile we'll just keep registering voters and hoping like hell we can dethrone the Bush dynasty by 2004. If the American people are so stupid as to return the Mad Bomber to office, though, God help us all.
