1. Suspicions? What on earth do you mean?
I would think that it's pretty obvious who/what "W" is, what he stands for, and what his objectives are.

Should make it pretty easy to decide where you are vis-a-vis "W".

2. Huh?
You "still have your suspicions"?

My suspicions are being confirmed every day, and have been for a long time.

When the war starts they will be confirmed 100%. I have no doubt we are going to war. The village idiot is leading the charge and I'm afraid nothing is going to deter him.

Reagan? I don't know-- he seems kind of harmless now compared to GWB.

10. Hey, Nothingshocks Me, this poster sounds a little odd, if you
get my drift, but I was a Reagan Democrat. I was born a Democrat and have always been one, but that year I voted for Reagan for the first term because the country was in such a bad state, we needed a change.

I was a HUGE supporter of Carter and even went to the train station in Ridgefield,Ct. to meet his wonderful mother, Miss Lillian. I thought Carter would save the world! After four years I knew the country needed a change. In the end I voted for Reagan for the first term.

I am the Democratic group that was sought after for years called the Reagan Democrat. The "Reagan Democrat" was why the DLC was formed and Clinton went Center.

I wouldn't vote for a Republican "in these times" again if the alternative was torture or poison.

But, "back then" there were different issues. Do some Google searches and check out what happened that Reagan appealed to Dems and you will see.

16. Koko I was well aware of the shenanigans that went on
with the hostage crisis. There was a book out in the 70's called "The seven sisters" about the oil companies and their relationship to the legislature and their desire to overthrow democracy. Reagan played on the hostage crisis to get elected. We KNEW he would be a union buster from the get go. I saw through it. BTW, Reagan was handed an even larger margin of victory by VNS as Carter conceded beofre half the west coast could even get to the polls.

24. Yes, but I voted for him once after Carter, I don't think you understood
my post. I have a very independent nature and Carter was a very frustrating President. That's why he wasn't re-elected. But, now that I am wiser I see that the Repugs even then might have had their dark hands in some of his problems. But, Carter was trashed very similar to Gore during his Presidency. The economy tanked and I had to survive and I thought he wasn't a good President. That's why I was a "Reagan Democrat."

It's us that made the DLC come to power. We got sick of the riots and the stuff in the economy in the 70's. Just as many of us dislike Tom Daschle and what "he doesn't do for us," many of us felt that about Carter.

I love the man now, as I did when I first voted for him. Whether he was a terrible President because of who he was, or the Repug. Hounds of Hell were after him from the get go, I don't know.

I've not been sorry I didn't vote for him. But, Reagan only got my vote one time. The only Repug I ever voted for in a Presidential Election.

19. Why are you attacking the original poster
Why can't people be able to say that they voted Republican in the past and not be attacked for it? It really concerns me that people are attacking other posters because they may have voted Republican in the past.

I see such a double standard here. I guess that it is okay for Greens and other fringe leftist parties to attack Democrats and explain their hatred for the party, but not okay for Democrats who have supported Republicans in the past to explain why they did. And further it must be okay for these people to be attacked since they fail the ideological purity test.

I would not attack someone for voting Republican in the past. That is off base.

5. Reagan
was the worst thing to happen to america until this little tyrant. Even Nixon doesn't hold a candle to the tricks being played on a unknowing/uncaring public by this doofus. Reagan succeeded in bankrupting the country, but at least you knew he was what he presented himself to be. Bush is a bought and paid for corporate influenced teller-on-non-truths. Sometimes I feel as though the country is being led by howdy doody.

11. I voted for Reagan
in 1980, but I was a Republican. I was a teenager and it was my first time to vote. I was raised in a very conservative and sheltered environment; my father was/is a deacon in the Southern Baptist Church (that should tell you something about my upbringing). After making that vote, I have since graduated from college and law school, where I was exposed to the "real" world. I am now a proud progressive, extremely liberal, Unitarian Universalist!

13. If You Mean You Converted...
I voted for Reagan when I was 18. I now know I was heavily influenced by my Republican father and Mondale just seemed so lackluster at a time our country was experiencing much malaise. I ended up voting for Bush 1 too. But that was the end of my Republican voting record.

I naively thought issues such as freedom of choice, separation of church and state and civil liberties would never be compromised because the common sense of citizens would rise up against any opposition to those issues. I also didn't financially support myself then and didn't really understand the needs of the general population.

I have gotten more liberal over time because I see the forest for the trees and that many Republicans would rather like our country to be an aristocracy. Remember Dubya's comment, "It would be easier if this were a dictatorship"? The current administration's policies reflect this elite attitude.

I don't know how you can be just "suspicious." For the first time in my life I am downright scared about where our goverment is taking us. We seem to be regressing. What proof do you need?

18. Yes I Voted Republican Twice...
but "Daddy" wasn't surprised when I stopped since long before 18 I eschewed religion, had smoked pot and railed against many of my parents' hypocritical beliefs. He was used to me rebelling. I was simply admitting that at the time I felt that Bush/Reagan were the right choices given the options and the mood of the country. Reagan won by an incredibly large margin. The unfortunate thing is Reagan is long gone but his people are still here and just as power greedy as ever.

As far as "Daddy" today, our arguments become stalemates. He is very intelligent but when I criticize Bush he always brings up Clinton as a comparison, a not uncommon tactic. Get over it already!! Though he is pro-choice (guess why) he doesn't seemed concerned about issues that don't affect him adversely, i.e. Bush's proposed tax cuts that favor the rich, freedom of speech, homeland security, prayer in schools etc, etc. He figured out how to get through life successfully without being very politcal.

I'm sure he regrets that his daughters are not in the position where he thinks they would support the GOP, i.e. being wealthy. He thinks we are brainwashed by "the liberal media." He admits that a $30k salary doesn't get you as far today as long ago but he won't say things such as CEOs salaries have risen disproportionately over the average line worker's by some 450% since 1970. He'll just complain about taxes or blame one Democrat or another. To be honest, I think he associates the Democratic Party with being poor, less educated and a party for complainers, which he doesn't want to be a part of. I would prefer both parties to go away. People need to be reminded that many programs that have improved the quality of life for millions in this country were put forth by liberals. That my father knows this doesn't matter because he has a survival of the fittest attitude. So we cancel eachother's votes.

15. You won't find a whole lot of Reagan supporters here...
...but even by the "Reagan" measure, the "Reagan Revolution" is dead. Bigger government, dangerous policies, more interference in our daily lives, less liberties. Hell man, GWB is pretty far from Reagan. He's no conservative, he's an opportunist thru and thru.

20. Bush thinks he can get his legacy by imitating Reagan but....
He is much more dangerous than Reagan... Reagan had no idea what kind of deficits he was going to run and what harm he was going to do to average, working taxpayers in this country. Dubya is fully aware of it - yet continues anyway...

"Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth -- more than ruin
-- more even than death.... Thought is subversive and revolutionary,
destructive and terrible, thought is merciless to privilege,
established institutions, and comfortable habit. Thought looks into
the pit of hell and is not afraid. Thought is great and swift and
free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man."

Even though my parents were. I just wasn't old enough to vote till 1984. My first vote... Mondale/Ferraro

As far as your other question... I don't know that all of New England is different. Maine can sometimes get fruity (Had the highest % of Perot voters in 92) But I'd say most of NE is pretty much the same as other Blue states overall.
