but "Daddy" wasn't surprised when I stopped since long before 18 I eschewed religion, had smoked pot and railed against many of my parents' hypocritical beliefs. He was used to me rebelling. I was simply admitting that at the time I felt that Bush/Reagan were the right choices given the options and the mood of the country. Reagan won by an incredibly large margin. The unfortunate thing is Reagan is long gone but his people are still here and just as power greedy as ever.As far as "Daddy" today, our arguments become stalemates. He is very intelligent but when I criticize Bush he always brings up Clinton as a comparison, a not uncommon tactic. Get over it already!! Though he is pro-choice (guess why) he doesn't seemed concerned about issues that don't affect him adversely, i.e. Bush's proposed tax cuts that favor the rich, freedom of speech, homeland security, prayer in schools etc, etc. He figured out how to get through life successfully without being very politcal.
I'm sure he regrets that his daughters are not in the position where he thinks they would support the GOP, i.e. being wealthy. He thinks we are brainwashed by "the liberal media." He admits that a $30k salary doesn't get you as far today as long ago but he won't say things such as CEOs salaries have risen disproportionately over the average line worker's by some 450% since 1970. He'll just complain about taxes or blame one Democrat or another. To be honest, I think he associates the Democratic Party with being poor, less educated and a party for complainers, which he doesn't want to be a part of. I would prefer both parties to go away. People need to be reminded that many programs that have improved the quality of life for millions in this country were put forth by liberals. That my father knows this doesn't matter because he has a survival of the fittest attitude. So we cancel eachother's votes.
