I swear to god this is one of the nastiest things I have done. The old hardwood is in such bad shape. There are animal urine stains all over it from being carpeted for 40 years. But when my last %28ever%2C hopefully%29 landlord pulled up the carpet in the 1920s house I was renting%2C it revealed black and white 9-inch tiles in a checkerboard pattern. It%27s really not too bad.  Rent a floor sander%2C and an edger and do it yourself.  It%27s cheaper%2C just as affective%2C and you may find you are very skillful at the home remodeling stuff.|0

The previous owners had carpeted over everything. Personally%2C I%27m not a big fan of carpeting. Our floors are red maple. Our kitchen had no hardwood floor so it had to be blended in with the floor in the dining room since we ripped out the wall between the two rooms.%0D%0A%0D%0AWe went with no stain%2C and two coats of poly. Our house was built in 1953%2C so out of curiosity%2C we peeled up a bit of carpet in the living room.%0D%0A%0D%0AOak plank.%0D%0A%0D%0AWe peeled up a corner in a bedroom.%0D%0A%0D%0AOak plank.%0D%0A%0D%0AThey put ugly%2C industrial-grade pile%2C beige wall-to-wall over beautiful tongue-in-groove oak plank.  I don%27t give a rat%27s ass how much sanding I have to do%2C that carpet is coming up.  No more dustmites%21  Yeehaw%21%0D%0A%0D%0A%28This will save us from %241000-%245000%2C even if we have to rent sanders and%2For pay flooring professionals to refinish.%29%0D%0A%0D%0AWe have a beautiful ceramic tile in the kitchen floor%2C with one serious drawback - if you get one drop of water on it%2C you might as well be wearing ice skates.  It%27s the slipperiest substance I%27ve ever seen when wet.  Unfortunately%2C it is not unknown for kitchen floors to get water on them %28not to mention that our hot tub is just outside the kitchen on the deck%29.  I have had first-hand experience with how hard that beautiful tile is entirely too many times.  We%27re considering ripping it up too%2C but as yet have not been able to confirm what is under the underlayment. Also lead glass windows.  %0D%0AThe roof has been completely stripped off and rebuilt in the last ten years %28just before mom died%29%2C there%27re a reasonably new bathroom and kitchen%2C and I put in a high-efficiency furnace two years ago.%0D%0AI%27ve mentioned I grew up here.  Grandma G bought the place in 1951 when it was about to be torn down to make room for a parking lot.  She paid around %243000 to have it moved one block %28BIG money fifty years ago%29 and the family has been here since April 1961%2C when mom and dad bought it from her.%0D%0AIn 125 years%2C the place has been owned by only two families %28Wylie%27s and ours%29.  Sure%2C the floors sag a bit%2C but it%27s home and I%27d never live anywhere else.
