"Confusion in Kunduz"
Alliance Attacks Kunduz; Confusion Over Taliban Truce (Update2)
By Chris Stephen

Kunduz, Afghanistan, Nov. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Northern Alliance forces attacked positions around the besieged Afghan city of Kunduz as their commanders gave conflicting accounts whether Taliban fighters are willing to surrender, the Associated Press and other news services reported.

Alliance forces attacked the city on three fronts after U.S. warplanes bombed Taliban positions overnight, Agence France-Presse cited a report by the Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press news agency as saying.

``We have chased the Taliban from the hills,'' Sadreddine, an Alliance commander, told AFP, referring to one of the fronts near Khanabad, 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of Kunduz.

Taliban commanders earlier agreed to allow the Northern Alliance into Kunduz ``possibly Saturday'' to oversee a surrender, Alliance spokesman Ashraf Nadeem told AP. Other leaders, though, said the talks on a truce failed.

1. "There is really very little good news from Afghanistan"
Despite all the good spin, the only good news in the past couple of weeks has been that the Taliban have been ousted from power.
Osama is still on the loose and Afghanistan is still in a state of anarchy. The ideal place for him right now is a nation in chaos. It's a place an outlaw can survive.
The Northern Alliance appear reluctant to share power. On addition to capturing Osama and dismantling his terrorist network, this will make difficult the following: establishing a stable government in Afghanistan; rebuilding Afghanistan's infrastructure; bringing relief to the starving.
The Northern Alliance had their chance to rule Afghanistan once before. They only succeeded in making the Taliban look like an attractive alternative. Now, with Mr. Bush's help, there in power again.
