"Underground Nuclear Testing"
"WASHINGTON - The Bush administration plans to raise the possibility that it might resume underground nuclear testing in the years ahead to help maintain the safety and reliability of a scaled-back U.S. strategic nuclear weapons arsenal, according to weapons specialists inside and outside the government.

The idea will be raised Tuesday when the administration lays out its broad strategic nuclear plans to Congress that will outline the reductions in nuclear weapons announced by President Bush at his meeting last month with Russian President Vladimir Putin."

didn't the government just ok Nevada to be the nuclear waste dump? And isn't that area on a earthquake fault (or something)? Now if we star underground testing, wouldn't that make the dump site even more unsafe?

Energy Secretary Mulls Dump Site

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A11332-2002Jan7.html

LAS VEGAS -- Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham emerged Monday from a tunnel at a proposed national nuclear waste dump, saying he was ready to make a decision on whether radioactive waste can be stored there safely.

"This completes my process of study and research," Abraham said after his first visit to the Nevada site since becoming energy secretary a year ago.

One visit to the site and he declares that he's done enough study and research to make a decision.

Unfreakingbelievable!

4. "No official decision on Yucca Mountain yet"
Of course, no one really thinks the DOE will do anything else but recommend Yucca Mountain as the depository site for high-level nuclear waste. After that, the DOE needs to be licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Again, though, I don't think anyone really believes that will be a major problem for the Yucca Mountain boosters. The problems, if any, will come when Nevada eventually sues the Federal Government. (Side note: If Bush pushes hard for this, he may well lose Nevada in 2004.)

I don't know if Yucca Mountain is on or near an earthquake fault or not, but I have heard that it is in a volcanic field. That makes it an odd choice for long-term nuclear waste storage in my eyes.

3. "Truly an international, historical travesty if this happens..."
The halting of all nuclear testing by Bush I about a decade ago was quite a landmark. That resumption is even being considered is a horrible signal to the rest of the world. If this happens, the world will become a much more dangerous place than it is now, as the use of nuclear weapons will be that much more thinkable.

Aren't we trying to make use of nuclear weapons utterly unthinkable? The halting of all testing went a long way towards that goal. When you're actively testing weapons, the clear signal is that you actually plan to use them someday.

Yuck yuck yuck.

Is Bush II trying to undo his dad's entire positive legacy? With moves like this and the one to roll back the Clean Air Act, it's beginning to look like it. What in the world is the motivation behind it?
