Enforcement of our personal attacks rule
It has become apparent that there is a great deal of confusion among our members regarding what constitutes a personal attack on this message board. This has been a particular problem over the last six months, as I had given the moderators greater leeway to deal with incivility.

In an effort to promote greater understanding, and to ensure more evenhanded enforcement of the rules, I have written up a one-page document which describes which types of personal attacks should get removed by the moderators.

In short, the document says this:

Personal attacks against individual members of this message board will be deleted. Attacks against ideas will be allowed to stay. Attacks against groups of people will generally be allowed to stay, but will be removed under certain circumstances.

We have tried to make the distinctions as clear as possible, to avoid any confusion and unfairness.

Please be aware that moderators are still human, and there will be times when they make mistakes. You are still expected to treat them with respect when they do so. If a moderator makes a mistake, you are welcome to send me a polite email and I will remedy the issue.

Also, please keep in mind that this is a huge message board, and it is simply not possible for the moderators to catch every rule infraction. So some inconsistency in enforcement is inevitable. For this reason, it is very helpful if our members use the "Alert" function whenever they see a rule violation.

The personal attack guidelines are here...

(No doubt, some of you will take these guidelines as an invitation to seek out "legal" ways to be rude to other members of this message board. I would strongly advise against doing so.)
