12||0|0yes 0|0|Anyone else dealing with home improvement this weekend%3F|ulysses||22:02:11|05/11/2002|Ms Uly %28Cheryl%29 and I decided%2C a few weeks ago%2C to start the process of adopting a baby. For those unfamiliar with the process - a large issue is the %22home study%22%2C in which a social worker makes a number of visits to your home to see how you live and make sure that your house%2Fapartment%2Fetc isn%27t collapsing. We%27ve got a few things to do to our 60-year-old house to make a good impression%2C although it%27s not collapsing.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe most pressing issue%2C in a house the age of ours%2C is jacking up the sagging floors. We decide%2C instead%2C to replace the kitchen cabinets this weekend. Bad move.%0D%0A%0D%0AAfter tearing out the existing cabinets and mucking up several walls in the process%2C it became a necessity to re-sheetrock about a wall and a half in said kitchen. This is now almost done...except for the joint tape and mud. The new cabinets sit%2C forlorn%2C in another room.%0D%0A%0D%0AIt%27s also come to our attention that the floorboards in several places in the kitchen are screwy - did I mention that the house is almost twice my age%3F - and so I am now intimate with the insanely small crawlspace under my house. All with a back that requires four days of rest and doubled pain pills after one day of work. We are going to hand dig a large hole in front of our house so we can put an egress window in. The window is 4%27 wide by 40%22 tall. Then we will be putting up sheetrock and building a closet in the room where we are going to be putting in the egress. Then hopefully we will rip out the carpeting in the living room and laying hard wood floor that came from a gymnasium%2Fbasketball court. The wood still has the varnish and the basketball key%2Flines on them. So we will have to lay them and then sand and refinish them. %0D%0A%0D%0AYou would be smart to get all the floors as level as possible before hanging to much more sheetrock and putting in the kitchen counters. If the floors have any sagging in that area and you do all of the other work before fixing the floors%2C you will have to re-do everything afterwards. Good luck on the home improvement projects. It can be a major pain%2C but the beauty of it all once it%27s done and the satisfaction of doing it yourself will be great. %0D%0A%0D%0AGood luck with the adoption. Sometimes when you level them out you create other problems by doing so. Cracked wall plaster%2C cracks in bricks%2C etc.%2C all start to appear when you start messing with that.%0D%0A%0D%0AAnd you NEVER know what you%27ll find when you start taking down cabinets that have been there for decades.%0D%0A%0D%0AI did manage to install some surround sound speakers in the living room. Had to drill a few holes in the floor to get the wires to pass underneath. I only drilled through one of the crossbeams.
