I%27ve heard that Studio Ghibli%27s trying to work something out to get it shown here%2C which would be really great. I think it even outdid Titanic in box-office sales in Japan%2C if not it%27s certainly up there.%0D%0A%0D%0AWhile we%27re on anime directors I%27d have to add Ikuhara Kunihiko%2C and without a doubt the best movie he ever did was Adolescence Mokushiroku %28Utena movie%29. Ran%2C Dreams are beautiful--no other word for them.  The Idiot%2C very underrated%2C but worth many viewings.%0D%0A%0D%0AFederico Fellini%3A  Satyricon%2C 8 1%2F2%2C La Dolce Vita%2C La Strada.  Fellini is sick and twisted and decadent%2C which automatically makes him interesting.  Sometimes shallow%2C often absurd%2C but always fascinating.%0D%0A%0D%0AHoward Hawks%3A  His Girl Friday.  Hawks made a beloved play better than ever by adding a Battle of the Sexes to an already-devastating skewering of journalism and politics.%0D%0A%0D%0AGeorge Cukor%3A  The Women.  Bitchy all-star fun.  Nobody could get performances out of women like Cukor.%0D%0A%0D%0ABilly Wilder%3A  Some Like It Hot%2C The Apartment and so many more%2C probably the last great comedic director.  Now%2C all we get are cheap laughs%2C rather than subtle%2C sustained humor.%0D%0A%0D%0AFrank Capra.  Mr. Deeds Goes to Town%2C Arsenic and Old Lace%2C It Happened Last Night%2C It%27s a Wonderful Life%2C Meet John Doe and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington are all fabulous.  Capra is at his best when he has a little guy going against the system.%0D%0A%0D%0AJohn Woo%3A  Better Tomorrow%2C Hard Boiled%2C The Killer.  For sheer action%2C John Woo when he still worked out of Hong Kong couldn%27t be beat.  He made violence and guns and blood look gorgeous%2C his gun fights were ballet.  And just try to count the bodies in Hard-Boiled.  My husband and I think we got all of %27em--at around 250%2C but it%27s difficult to tell.  Chow Yun-Fat is his sexiest ever in the opening scene to the Killer.  MMMMMMM Yummy%21%0D%0A%0D%0AAng Lee%3A  Crouching Tiger--a great movie that would have been better without the hokey aerobatics.  Sense and Sensibility%2C the beloved Jane Austen novel was lovely and had just the right amount of restraint%2C as befits an English period piece.%0D%0A%0D%0A%5Bfont color%3D%22%23333333%22 size%3D%221%22 face%3D%22Verdana%22%5D%0D%0A%5Bfont color%3D%22%23009999%22 size%3D%221%22 face%3D%22Verdana%22%5DEvery national government finds national self-esteem useful%2C every rich government finds plutocracy useful%2C every obscurantist government finds credulity useful.
