Chicagoland and area DU Meeting!
Hey everyone, this is the Chicagoland and surrounding area and anyone else who feels like making the drive DU meeting thread.

The other one is lost somewhere in the archives because we've been slacking on keeping it up here.

The last meeting was fun, and at least for me enlightening. It was great getting to see so many people face-to-face and put faces to posters.

So anyway, Here's the deal. We're planning on meeting April 20th at 3pm at a reserved room in a restaurant in the near-west suburbs. liberal_and_proud_of_it is organizing the event, so you should send her a private message to get the location and directions, etc. Anyone can come!

I'm looking into holding some sort of raffle for DU Gear (proceeds either donated to DU or kept to help pay for future Chicago events, haven't decided which yet), but I haven't worked out how that will work yet (I'll keep you posted). There may also be door prizes, or something similar.

Also, if you attended the last meeting, please RSVP with liberal_and_proud_of_it anyway so she knows how many people to expect.

I hope to see everyone who was there last time again, and a bunch of new faces.

Elad

7. Chicagoland...........
Odd as it may seem, "Chicagoland" is indeed a bonafide nickname for Chicago. It's been that way ever since I can remember. The Car Dealerships especially like to use the word "Chicagoland" as in "You Chicagoland Chrysler Dealers would like to offer you.....yadda, yadda..."

13. As long as i can remember.
It's been referred to as Chicagoland, rather than "metro area" or "greater Chicago area" since i can remember, and i'm almost 46.

Rand McNally has been putting out Chicagoland maps for at least since before in could drive, because my dad had one. For the last 20 years or so, the map is still made by the same folks (whatever corporation took over R-M), but it comes out under the Tribune's name.

I have the 1998 edition, just to have a comprehensive map of arterials and main feeders.

So, the direct answer to your question is, a very long time.

8. I remember the phrase CHICAGOLAND
way back in '74 when I attended Libertyville High School. Hey, off subject here, I'm wondering if Highland Park is as snooty now as it was then. I remember my friend Marsha and I got pulled over in a beat-up old Mustang, and the cop told us he pulled us over because we "didn't look like the type of people who should be here." We both wondered what their reaction had been if we had been BLACK GIRLS. I'm sure we would have been taken away.

My former boss' kids went there -- graduated during the 1980s. Anyway, according to my ex-boss, Highland Park High had significant drug problems, mainly because the kids could afford them.

14. April 20th meeting responses
I'm sorry it is taking me a while to respond to everyone about the next meeting. It was pretty hectic last week (in a good way) so I had to wait to get started. I've gotten a LOT of responses and want to keep this organized. Please be patient with me.

I think Elad's idea about the raffle and/or door prizes is a great. Anyone else have any suggestions?

Judy

19. I think I may be coming
April 20th is the old man's birthday, and he really loves Chicago, so we're sort of tentatively thinking of driving up (from Central Missouri). Judy, I will email you when I know more for sure.

Anybody know how long a drive it is from St. Louis to Chicago? I'm kind of looking forward to it, I've never been to Illinois, except for one accidental foray into East St. Louis.

20. That would be great Dirk
St. Louis to Chicago is about a 5 to 6 hour drive, depending on how you drive and where in St. Louis you start from. To give you an idea, you would take I-55 North to I-294 North and exit near I-88. Out in the western suburbs rather than the city itself. Of course I would be happy to send you complete directions.

If it looks like you will make it will you need accomodations? IF so let me know what your priority is - cheap as possible? must have an indoor pool? accepts dogs? easiest to get to?

21. accomodations--yes!
Cheap would be nice, but since this is also a birthday trip I'm willing to spend some bucks to make it nice. I was looking at a Fairfield Inn at 216 East Ontario St., at @ $129/night. It seems to be "downtown," which is what I would prefer. Does that seem like a good rate? Hotels are much cheaper here (a typical one-night stay is $75-$85), but I can appreciate the higher cost, having lived in San Fran once, where a motel could cost that much. Do you have any suggestions for a decent place?

I think we may also take the train up--the trip time is not much longer than driving, and it would be worth it to not have to drive that far. I'm not too sure my car would make it anyway. =(

24. This can't wait until the April 20 meeting
I got an e-mail from Carolyn Kay at makethemaccountable.com with an alert that Tom Ridge will be coming to the Four Seasons Hotel just off Michigan Ave. on April 10. He will be a featured presenter at an April 9-10 conference in Chicago sponsored by Fortune magazine. A ticket costs $1,955 (think he would talk to Congress for the right price?)

Carolyn is organizing a protest for the event. Write to Carolyn at caro@makethemaccountable.com for more info on the protest plans.

26. Meeting update
There has been some concern that this April 20 meeting will be crashed by freepers.

I have taken steps and the situation is under control. I am prepared for any potential disruption. Although I appreciate the sentiment, please leave your boxing gloves at home. By all means, come prepared to take action though. This should be a lot of fun.

The ONLY venue I am using to disclose any details about the meeting is DU Private Mail. I will be sending PM's to everyone who responded about the meeting so far this weekend. Please be patient as I have a LOT of PM's to send. Response to this meeting has been great and it looks like we should have a very good turn out. One of the DU administrators (Elad) will be there to address the group too!

Anyone who has not received an update PM from me by Monday, April 8 should contact me by PM again. I don't want anyone to slip through the cracks.

27. Meeting this Saturday
The theme for this meeting is getting involved.

We will talk about some of the things that have been happening around Chicago like the recent book signings by Michael Moore and Greg Palast as well as GW's invasion of the Chicago St. Patrick's Day parade.

Some of the other things we will be discussing include getting involved in IL political races. There are lots of important US House races this year and Senator Durbin is also up for re-election, not to mention our own governors race. We will have information from various Democratic campaigns on how to get involved.

We will also talk about Jim Hightower's Rolling Thunder Down Home Democracy Tour, which will be coming to Chicago on June 15. We would like to organize a Democratic Underground booth for the event. It is described as a county fair with guts, a revival with a reason, a concert with consciousness, a festival with funk and function.

We will also be looking for volunteers to work on sponsoring speakers for small gatherings. Many, many people would love to address a group ranging from local politicians to liberal authors and celebrities. The gatherings can be a few neighbors and friends you invite over for coffee or it can involve a hall and ticket sales. This is a very do-able grass roots way to spread the information and enthusiasm we enjoy on DU with other people. Knowledge is power and it is up to us to spread it around.

Elad, one of the DU Administrators will be there. He plans to address the group - tell a little bit about the history and vision of DU. He is also bringing bumper stickers for everyone and we will have a raffle for DU merchandise. Everyone who comes gets a raffle ticket and you can get extra tickets for doing other things like making a donation to DU, bringing a friend, signing up to get involved, etc.

If anyone still needs info about the location and directions, contact me by DU Private Message. If you asked for info but haven't heard back from me, check your Inbox (click on the icon at the top of the screen when you are in the Lobby). If I missed you, it wasn't intentional. Let me know and I will send it again.

29. The meeting was a great success
We talked about a lot of ways to get involved in political campaigns as well as spreading the word of the issues and news we talk about here on DU. We started forming committees to work on a booth at the Chicago stop of the Rolling Thunder tour and to sponsor speakers and book signings. We have also started compiling a DU-Chicago registry of phone numbers and e-mail addresses so we can notify each other more quickly of interesting events.

It was decided that we will continue to meet once a month on the third Saturday at 3:00. That means the next meeting is May 18.

I will be starting a thread in the next day or so with a full report on the 4/20 meeting. SunsetSky's sister took very comprehensive notes at yesterday's meeting and there's a lot to report on. Anyone who wants to get involved in either of the two committees and/or be included in the registry can contact me by DU Private Message.

Thanks to everyone who came. Let's keep the momentium going!
