They were referring to the horrific killing in broad daylight of Orlando Letelier%2C former ambassador and minister%2C and his assistant Ms. Ronni Moffit%2C a human rights activist%2C in the heart of Washington%92s diplomatic district. %0D%0A%0D%0AIt was September 21%2C 1976. A powerful incendiary device placed under the victims%92 car was detonated by remote control. The vehicle%2C a Chevelle 1975%2C exploded in the middle of Massachusetts Avenue%2C Embassy Row%2C one of the capital%92s most prestigious districts. %0D%0A%0D%0AThere was an extraordinarily lengthy and complex investigation.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe assassination had considerable political impact. In Chile%2C fascist general Augusto Pinochet was in power and political repression had reached unprecedented levels. The secret police %97 the sinister DINA %97 were systematically eliminating any opposition. In a murky conspiracy between the extreme right regimes of Argentina%2C Chile%2C Uruguay%2C Paraguay and Bolivia%2C in cahoots with the CIA and its Cuban-American mercenaries in Miami%2C a plan was hatched to exterminate leftwing activists. It was called Plan Condor%2C and with the CIA%92s blessing it extended beyond Latin American borders. %0D%0A%0D%0AIn Langley%2C George Bush %97 former CIA agent in Miami%2C son of a banker sanctioned for his financial links with Hitler%92s Germany and subsequently elected to the Senate %97 was running the company with extraordinary Machiavelianism. %0D%0A%0D%0AOf course%2C his agents were the first at the scene of the crime%2C as well as the FBI and various federal police agents from the District of Colombia. %0D%0A%0D%0ALetelier enjoyed great prestige%3B he had held important posts in Salvador Allende%92s constitutional government%3A ambassador to the United States%2C minister of the interior%2C minister of international relations%2C and minister of defense when the putsch occurred. He was detained on the very day of the coup and sent to Dawson Island%2C close to the Antarctica%2C for an already planned execution. But thanks to strong international pressure he was released and deported to Venezuela%2C traveling on to the United States. There he immediately took up the struggle against Pinochet%92s dictatorship.%0D%0A%0D%0AAfter Letelier%92s horrific assassination%2C many individuals and organizations demanded to know the full facts of the case. Whilst the public%2C various publications and Letelier%92s own collaborators pointed the finger at the Pinochet regime%2C some unexpected theories %97 denying that connection %97 were suddenly published in the press...on the personal orders of George Bush%2C as was discovered some years later.%0D%0A%0D%0AUtilizing allegedly exclusive sources%2C the well-known magazine Newsweek published revelations that shocked everyone. Incredibly%2C Letelier and Moffit were not murdered in a plot schemed up by Pinochet%92s henchmen. The weekly cited a CIA %22secret report%22 to the FBI concerning an attack mounted by leftwing extremists who wanted to kill Letelier to create a martyr for themselves.%0D%0A%0D%0AIt emerged much later that because George Bush was dissatisfied with that press campaign he personally disinformed Secretary of State Henry Kissinger %97 the head of U.S. diplomatic relations %97 who then met with Pinochet in Chile and confirmed the %22authenticity%22 of Newsweek%92s theories and the DINA%92s innocence.%0D%0A%0D%0AAfter a laborious search%2C thousands of interviews and hundreds of false leads planted by the CIA itself%2C five suspects of Cuban origin were arrested by the FBI. %0D%0A%0D%0AThe five individuals %97 brothers Guillermo and Ignacio Novo%2C Jos%E9 Dionisio %22Bloodbath%22 Su%E1rez Esquivel%2C Virgilio Paz Romero and Alvin Ross D%EDaz %97 all belonged to CORU%2C an infamous terrorist group. It was created in the Dominican Republic in 1976%2C on the orders of killer doctor Orlando Bosch%2C following a CIA initiative aimed at bringing together various mercenaries and anti-Castro killers in one sole organization. Over the years%2C CORU has been responsible for hundreds of crimes%3A against Cuba%2C Cuban objectives%2C and leftwing persons and groups from various countries. %0D%0A%0D%0AThe FBI already knew about Ignacio and Guillermo Novo. In 1994%2C the two men fired a bazooka at the United Nations building when %22Che%22 Guevara was addressing the General Assembly. The Novo brothers were arrested... sentenced...and finally pardoned at a second trial%3B their defense lawyers employed various devices to refute the prosecuting attorney%92s key evidence. Yet another CIA-inspired trick to rescue its collaborators.%0D%0A%0D%0AShortly after their release%2C Ignacio and Guillermo Novo were contracted by the Cuban American National Foundation %28CANF%29%2C headed by Jorge M%E1s Canoso%2C to take charge of the group%92s information committee.%0D%0A%0D%0ASu%E1rez and Paz disappeared for 12 years until they were caught by the authorities. The FBI acknowledged that the two men were so dangerous that they even circulated Paz%92s details on the TV program %22America%92s Most Wanted%22. %28The most dangerous criminals on U.S. territory sought by the police are detailed in the program.%29%0D%0A%0D%0ABoth men admitted they had participated in the double murder and were duly sentenced...to 12 years each in jail.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe truth about those responsible for the Letelier-Moffit murders was not to be revealed until almost 25 years after the event. On September 18%2C 2000%2C a 21-page CIA report to Congress confirmed for the first time that Manuel Contreras%2C intelligence chief of the DINA%2C Pinochet%92s secret police force%2C headed the conspiracy.%0D%0A%0D%0AContreras%92 %22terrorist boss%22 was Michael Townley%2C a U.S. citizen who was both a DINA agent and an active CIA collaborator. He and Armando Fern%E1ndez%2C an officer in the Chilean army and a DINA agent%2C illegally entered the United States %28using Paraguayan passports authorized by dictator Stroessner at the special request of Pinochet%29 to meet and collaborate with CORU leaders. Guillermo Novo and his brother personally guaranteed cooperation and got their own killers to provide all the necessary materials and help.%0D%0A%0D%0AOn September 19%2C 1976%2C Townley%2C %22Bloodbath%22 and Paz went to Orlando Letelier%92s house in Bethesda%2C Maryland%2C where Townley attached the device under the former ambassador%92s car. It was detonated on September 21.%0D%0A%0D%0ATownley immediately called up the Novo Brothers%2C advising them that something had gone down in the District of Columbia. He left for Chile on the September 24.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe CIA also confessed to prior knowledge of Contreras%92 intentions%2C for in addition to being a Pinochet spy%2C he also appeared on their books. Townley was later extradited from Chile in 1978%2C and served five years in a U.S. prison%2C while cooperating with the FBI. He was finally released and now lives under another name thanks to the witness protection program...in spite of his numerous crimes. %0D%0A%0D%0AGuillermo Novo is currently in detention in Panama along with Luis Posada Carriles%2C whom The New York Times called one of the most dangerous terrorists in the hemisphere. With other accomplices the two men attempted to detonate a powerful explosive device in the middle of a student gathering where Cuban President Fidel Castro was scheduled to talk during the November 2000 Ibero-American Summit. %0D%0A%0D%0AReleased from a federal jail%2C as Cuban citizens%2C %22Bloodbath%22 Su%E1rez Esquivel and Virgilio Paz Romero were handed over to the Immigration and Naturalization Service %28INS%29%2C an organization whose responsibilities include expelling ex-jail bird foreigners in irregular situations from the U.S. territory. %0D%0A%0D%0ABut thanks to the intervention of CANF %97 always at the ready to rescue its cronies %97 George W. Bush himself authorized the release of the two dangerous criminals in the summer of 2001. %0D%0A%0D%0AVirgilio Paz left the INS Bradenton Detention Center on July 25%2C and Dionisio Su%E1rez was back on the streets on August 14. Just a few weeks away from September 11%21 %0D%0A%0D%0AThe depth of disgrace however%2C came on May 20%2C 2002%2C when George W. Bush was in Miami speaking to the most representative elements of the anti-Cuban mafia. The two terrorists were present%2C frenetically applauding his words.%0D%0A%0D%0A%22Bloodbath%22 Su%E1rez Esquivel and Virgilio Paz Romero%2C now at liberty to resume their professional terrorist activities%2C took the opportunity not only to listen to their master%92s voice talking about his %22dreams%22 of a %22new Cuba%22%2C but to thank him for their freedom. %0D%0A%0D%0AThere we have it %97 American justice in all its splendor.%0D%0A%0D%0AGeorge Bush Sr. never had to explain his role as CIA chief in this dirty story of murder and disinformation. %0D%0A%0D%0ANor has his son%2C that great denouncer of universal terrorism%2C ever been questioned %97 not even by the supposedly free press %97 concerning his motives for freeing such riffraff.%0D%0A%0D%0AMeanwhile%2C the five individuals who assassinated the high-ranking Chilean politician and his assistant %97 and remember it was called one of the worst acts of state terrorism ever witnessed in the United States %97 have benefited from all the U.S. legal system%92s favors%2C making a mockery of all those people who are demanding and will continue to demand justice for the five imprisoned Cuban patriots. These five men%2C sentenced for attempting to counteract activities by precisely those minuscule anti-Cuban terrorist groups%2C are currently being held in five different prisons in the empire. %0D%0A%0D%0Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.granma.cu%2Fingles%2Fjulio02-3%2F29amist-i.html%0D%0A%5Bb%5D%5Bcenter%5D%5Bfont color%3D%22red%22%5D%0D%0A%A9 1998.
