HELL NO, LET'S GO: See the World, Minus Killing -- Rall
HELL NO, LET'S GO

See the World, Minus Killing
NEW YORK--Here's another sign that the world is coming to an end: conservative Republicans are now fighting off liberal Democratic efforts to bring back the draft.

On New Year's Eve Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY), a liberal African-American who represents Harlem, announced his contrarian war cry on the op-ed page of The New York Times. Noting the White House's desire to attack Iraq with or without an excuse, Rangel linked Bush's bellicosity to the fact that the soldiers in America's all-volunteer armed forces are disproportionately black and poor: "I believe that if those calling for war knew their children were more likely to be required to serve--and to be placed in harm's way--there would be more caution and a greater willingness to work with the international community in dealing with Iraq."

snip.........

That's where my idea comes in. Mandatory public service is a good idea, but rather than send young adults off to war or make them put in time planting trees or picking up trash--wasting the best years of their lives on killing and make-work--why not send them to study overseas for two years?

Sound crazy? Here's crazy: only seven percent of Americans own a passport--fewer than 20 million people--and only a fraction of those ever use one. Citizens of the United States, whose military and culture exert more international influence than those of every other nation combined, are among the planet's least-traveled homebodies. We're love to tell other folks what to do, but we never see where or how they live, much less get to know who they are.

And that's also nuts.

1. Only seven percent?
I'm stunned. I hadn't really thought through how low the actual number must be. Maybe we should do our own informal poll here on DU: Who has a passport? Who has been out of the country in the last six months? Two years? Ever?

It wouldn't be scientific, but it would be intersting.

I've had a valid passport almost continuously since I first obtained one in 1970, but went 11 years without going outside the U. S. (except border crossings in Canada and Mexic which hardly count, in my opinion).

In March of 2001 we made a family (self, spouse, two teenage sons) trip to Australia, and were frequently questioned about W. We made it abundantly clear that we had not voted for him, that there was massive voter fraud in Florida, and that he was installed in a coup. And pretty much every person we spoke to then said, "Hmmm, that's interesting. I haven't yet met a single American who voted for him." Our interpretation? Republicans don't travel abroad.

2. I love this idea!
Hell, I want to do it and I'm in my 40s. Imagine how this would broaden Murkin youth and make them less vulnerable to that mindless "We're #1" jingoistic nonsense.

3. Time studying abroad was the most valuable part of my kids' education.
One got her honors degree in economics from University College Dublin (three years living in Ireland, and travel in UK/Europe), has worked for several European banks, and vacations in Europe. One spent a semester in Germany and has worked on international projects. One spent a year working in Indonesian rain forests and has been to the Artic Circle, Sweden, India and Africa - he just sent me the Japanese edition of one of his books. We were a single parent family and took out student loans, Mom loans and had work/study jobs - you don't have to be wealthy to see the world. Get your sense of adventure and curiosity in gear; research the possibilities and encourage your children to study abroad.
