Harper's: Undercover among America's Secret Theocrats
If you want to be truly, seriously frightened about the future of our country, pick up the latest Harper's and read this article. It's subject is the shadowy group that puts on the "Nation Prayer Breakfast" every year. But that's only the benign public face. Inside the group, they are training the "future leaders of America" with frightening, cult-like techniques. They count as their associate members many of the more vile Repukes in Congress, such as John Grassley, James Inhofe, and most especially, Don Nickles, who is a major supporter.

Although the group claims to be about training people to serve Jesus, they sometimes sound more like the Mafia. In fact, they refer to themselves as "The Family" and their long-time leader, Doug Coe, is a frank admirer of the Mafia. This a part of a conversation between Coe and Todd Tiahrt, Republican congressman from Kansas:

"We gotta take Jesus out of the religious wrapping."
"Alright, how do we do that?" Tiahrt asked.
"A covenant," Doug answered..."Like the Mafia", he clarified. "Look at the strength of their bonds." He made a fist and held it before Tiahrt's face. Tiahrt nodded, squinting. "See, for them it's honor. For us, it's Jesus."

Coe listed other men who had changed the world through the strength of the covenants they had forged with their "brothers": "Look at Hitler," he said. "Lenin, Ho Chi Minh, Bin Laden." The Family, of course, possesses a weapon those leaders lacked: the "total Jesus" of a brotherhood in Christ. "That's what you get with a covenant," said Coe.

And it gets better. They not only think of themselves as "The Family", but also as "The Chosen". Chosen by God, of course. And listen to this supposed "Bible lesson" from Doug Coe's son, David:

"Hey, you know what's interesting about King David? . . . King David liked to do really bad things." He chuckled. "Here's this guy who sllept with another man's wife--Bathsheba, right?--an then basically murders her husband. And this guy is one of our heroes." David shook his head. "I mean, Jiminy Christmas, God likes this guy! What," he said, "is THAT all about?"
The answer, we discovered, was that King David had been "chosen". To illustrate the point David Coe turned to Beau. "Beau, let's say I hear you raped three little girls. And now here you are with us. What would I think of you, Beau?"
Beau shrank into the cushions. "Probably that I'm pretty bad."
"No, Beau. I wouldn't. Because I'm not here to judge you. That's not my job. I'm here for only one thing."
"Jesus?" Beau said. David smiled and winked.

You see, if you're one of the "chosen", you can do anything, ANYTHING, and it's okay, because Jesus is on your side. This is the kind of "Christianity" the power mongers in Washington is getting indoctrinated into. While they say "Jesus" a lot, it's very obvious that conquering, rampaging dictators are more to their liking. This group is training "Christian soldiers" to dominate the world, and they have remarkable access to the highest echelons of power. This is one of the most frightening things I've read in long, long time.

3. Very Interesting Article, BUT . . .
I was disappointed that the author did not spell out more clearly the Reconstructionsists' goals and the type of policies and government structure they support.

That is what is frightening.

Jack Neefus
College Park, MD
"The loud little handful will shout for war. The pulpit will warily and cautiously protest at first.... The great mass of the nation will rub its sleepy eyes, and will try to make out why there should be a war, and they will say earnestly and indignantly: "It is unjust and dishonorable and there is no need for war."...Then the few will shout even louder....Next, the statesmen will invent cheap lies...and each man will be glad of these lies and will study them because they soothe his conscience; and thus he will by and by convince himself that the war is just and he will thank God for a better sleep he enjoys by his self-deception." Mark Twain

11. agree, there was a conspicuous absence of passion
it was as if the author was a robot or a zombie just experiencing and reflecting back without showing any response or sense of scope. Interesting style; perhaps this is some trendy take on the "new journalism" that I'm out of the loop on. But I seriously wanted to slap the author for just blandly reporting instead of screaming out and righteously outing these cultish frauds for the monstrous NON-Christians they are!

But that's just me. And I'm used to DU.

Everyone should read it and become outraged too. It describes an appalling development we should all become aware of.

Has Moyers don Christian Reconstructionists yet? I would so like to see that, or Frontline!

4. Besides media venues for liberal politicos...
...we might need public pulpits for religious leaders who are actually spiritual, and actually know their stuff, to rebut all these Fundie misreadings of liturgical texts...

...for example, King David wasn't God's "pal" -- God (according to original Hebrew interpretations) always thought David had too much blood on his hands, and therefore wouldn't let him build the Temple. God also sent a messenger/prophet -- Natan -- to upbraid David for arranging to kill Bathsheba's husband.

Fundies are full of it -- they think they can rationalize anything with one or two vague Biblical citations...

The most any christian does is complain about actual actions like Dumbya's warmongering. They'll never have the guts to speak out about the basic sickness and perversity of another christians' version of religion which makes them do those things. They are just pandering and covering up.

6. Actually...
theologians like Matt Fox speak up all the time. It got him defrocked from the Catholic church (He's an Episcopal cleric now).

And Martin Luther King was doing a pretty good job espousing an all-inclusive spirituality that fed broad-based political power...

We need more like them...

12. mainstream religions should start organizing alternative
LAST EDITED ON Mar-07-03 AT 11:08 PM (ET)

prayer breakfasts. You see the nation are knee jerk believers, so politicos aren't going to ignore religous invites without an alternative, but most people are not in the religious right, so mainstreamers should start organizing alternative prayer breakfasts. Even mainstream religions can see these people are evil because they attack mainstream denominations all the time.

13. I agree, CL
We need to offer organizational alternatives to all their various Korps...

including an alternative prayer breakfast -- maybe an ecumenical one -- that the more largehearted members of Congress (wishful thinking?) can attend...and network at, etc.

Oh man...these people are sick.
I really don't think it would be prudent to write down what I REALLY think about these...nevermind...

14. Standard Calvinist doctrine
Predestination. No matter what you do, as long as you have been "chosen" or "saved" you will get to heaven. This is the reason I joined and support Americans United. Barry Lynn would be an excellent choice for alternative services.

It just goes on and on. Truly scary shit. People always say you can use the Bible to support anything, but I had never imagined twisted self-deception on this scale. "Jesus" is repeated over and over like a mantra, but the organization is most definitely modeled after criminal organizations like the Mafia or terrorist organizations. They're quite up front about their admiration of Hitler, Stalin, Ghengis Khan, Bin Laden, and other infamous criminals of history. It's shocking.

10. Shades of the Knights Templar, the Inquisition and so many other
"secret" christian organizations. Every one used to cover evil actions for evil desires.

THIS is why the founding fathers seperated church and state.
