Eric Margolis (Toronto Sun): Bush's war is not about democracy
PALM BEACH, Fla. -- President George Bush claimed last week his impending war against Iraq would bring peace and democracy to the Middle East, and liberate Iraqis from repression.

At the same time, in a move clearly aimed at intimidating the media, the White House denounced a CBS News interview with Saddam Hussein, in which the Iraqi leader asserted his nation had nothing to do with 9/11 or al-Qaida, as "propaganda."

Now, I have no love for Saddam's sinister, brutal regime. The last time I was in Baghdad, in late 1990, the Iraqi secret police threatened to hang me as a spy after I discovered a group of technicians and scientists who had been secretly sent by the British government to produce anthrax and other germ warfare weapons for Iraq to use against Iran.

But what I dislike even more than Saddam's nasty regime are government lies and propaganda.

1. Margolis is an American citizen...He's not an "interfering" Canadian

Mr. Margolis has been on Canadian TV often and is an expert in mid-east affairs with many connections in the area...He's been on CNN also, but often appears out of Toronto and is never introduced as an American...The reason I'm stressing his ciizenship is because in talk radio I have heard him referred to as an interfering Canadian who is anti-American...Perhaps some Americans who see and read him might be more convinced by his arguments if they knew he is American...

4. And he served in the US Army in the Viet Nam era

I don't know for sure whether or not he actually served in Viet Nam, but I know he has said in his columns that he voluntarily signed up in the US Army during the Viet Nam war because he thought at the time it was the right thing to do.

2. Misery loves company
Misery loves company. An American-occupied Iraq looks destined to join the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza as another human, political and moral disaster for all concerned.

One would think that people would look at the IDF's experience in the Occupation and think twice before endorsing Bush's occupation of Iraq. In 1967, Israelis had no idea that their occupation was going to last as long as it had, they had a fervent hope that the land they had captured could easily be traded in exchange for permanent peace with their Arab neighbors.

Unlike the Isralis of 1967, we are getting plenty of warning from the Kurds, the Sunnis, and the Shias that they are not about to be disenfranchised by an American MacArthur ruling from Baghdad. As one of the leaders of the Kurdish opposition said a few days ago, the Iraqis will never accept "Saddamnism without Saddam."

This could turn out to be quite a bloody and hostile occupation!

3. democracy....
The Bush administration makes a lot of noise about promoting democracy around the world. But when 94% of the Turkish population takes an anti-war stance, the Bush people encourage the Turkish government to reject the will of the people and vote for war. Isn't there something wrong with this picture?

5. Does Margolis dislike government lies and propaganda even
more than Saddam's nasty regime because he feels the lies being told and the propaganda being spread are nastier, even more evil, than Saddam's regime?
