Bias re enforcing the personal attack rule is getting a bit obvious
Will Pitt posts a thread"you can kiss my ass" When he is attacked the thread gets locked.
Carlos personally attackes everyone who sees things differenly, after he gets taken to task the thread gets locked.
Trumad posts a thread in the lounge which is an obvious attack on a poster who is leaving. Trumad says he's sorry for past transgressions that have been WAY over the line, he is still welcome despite contributing little.
I request the rule be enforced with equity or abandoned.

1. Howdy nothingshocksmeanymore
When you see a personal attack please use the alert button
this goes for all of statements made that you feel may be
against policy .

We try to find em first and really could use help from
DUers by alerting Moderators to any infringement of the
rules .

2. I'm sorry that you feel that way.
We enforce the rule fairly. We've got a dozen moderators, representing a wide range of liberal opinion, who discuss all of these enforcement issues and come to a consensus before any action is taken.

It is not possible to read everything on this board. But the moderators do try to read every alert that comes in. If you see a rule infraction, hit the alert link. If you don't hit the alert link, the post will not be deleted and the infraction will stay on the board.

As a member, it is easy to selectively choose examples to prove that we are "biased" against any point of view. In fact, I get accused of bias practically every day, sometimes multiple times.

But the truth is that we are extremely fair.

3. Skinner I appreciate the reply BUT... I DID hit the alert on Will's kiss

my ass thread, more than once... not only was it a personal and general attack on many using his presumed credibility as a published author to get away with it but it completely violated the spirit of the "civility and respect" section of the rules.

You know I am supportive of you and the mods but I speak what some wish to say but DON'T when I tell you there is a feeling that some are a protected class while others MUST tow the line.

This is my final comment on the subject. I made my feelings known. You can do something with it or nothing. Frankly, taking a few people aside and talking to them like a "dutch Uncle" in private would be my chosen suggestion. I need not see the action taken but please don't dismiss my observation.

4. I am with you nothingshocks me
The entire "kiss my ass" thread should have been eliminated as soon as it began.

I wont say it is a matter of favoritism, but I really was shocked that it was not pulled.

I am forgiving of Mr. Pitt for his diatribe, but anyone who ever says that to my face, well that is another matter. Where I come from, that is a worse insult than saying F*** You.

5. I double-dog agree
It was a thread whose SOLE PURPOSE was to be a flame bait---a massive waste of forum space, other's times, as well as their emotions.

I found it very offensive, and, like the poster above said, I do think there is a....clique...of people who are allowed to post whatever inflamatory rhetoric they want and not get called on it until WAY past the point that others, who aren't in the 'clique' would have been called on the same thread.

Honestly, *I* myself didn't hit the alert button because in all seriousness, I thought it would have been closed down much MUCH sooner than it was

7. Technically, it wasn't personal in the way we define personal.
We define personal as an attack on one individual. Will's thread was broadly aimed.

You may have noticed that we have let many, many threads stay that are broadly aimed: "The Moderates are _________!"; The DLC is ___________!"; "Greens are __________!"; "The Extreme Left is ___________!"; etc.

Are these threads constructive? No, they're typically just flame bait. But they don't violate the rules, so sometimes the moderators let the threads stay to see what happens. And the moderators understand that if someone posts flame bait, that person is going to get flamed.

And in the end, the person who starts the flame-bait thread usually doesn't end up looking very good. So I'm of the opinion that we're not exactly doing them any favors by letting their flame-bait threads stay.

It's so obvious.

Good point.

And in the end, the person who starts the flame-bait thread usually doesn't end up looking very good.

I really do. At the same time, it would be nice to be able to come here and not be accused of being the equivalent of an Al-Qaeda member.

11. lol
LAST EDITED ON Nov-21-02 AT 11:12 PM (ET)

My "Kiss my ass" thread went to 208 posts and lasted for two days. I got blasted by about 195 in that thread. Rightfully so, actually, which was the point, which was also why (I'm pretty sure) the mods let it hang fire after it got so demonstrably out of control. They didn't lock it after I got personally attacked. They locked it after it got too big to load.

Yer a wee mite off-base including me in this one.

12. Funny ...
... as far as I could tell, the foo didn't shit. Thus, I felt sorta left out of the fecal festival. Besides, I was the only one in the entire thread who asked you to pucker up (with an alum enema assist) and sent you a kiss. (Sigh)
