As leader of the Democratic party%2C that%27s his duty. Now%27s the time for him to speak out. %0D%0A%0D%0AThere%27s only one problem%3A Al Gore%27s not ready. As I found out this week%2C first hand. %0D%0A%0D%0AWhen not teaching in New York or Tennessee%2C Gore spends his time these days in his transition office%3A a temporary%2C run down%2C bare bones space over a video store in downtown Arlington%2C Virginia%2C that resembles a campaign headquarters more than the office of a former vice president of the United States. It%27s a long way from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Upon my arrival%2C a staff member even apologized%3A %22Remember%2C it%27s not really his office. He rarely comes here.%22 %0D%0A%0D%0AIf the surroundings were depressing%2C Gore was anything but. He was relaxed%2C comfortable%2C quick with a big smile and funny line. Over a cup of coffee%2C he told me how much he loved teaching%3B how much he was enjoying his paid public speaking engagements%3B and what fun he and Tipper were having%2C working with several student researchers%2C writing a book about family. He glowed with pride%2C telling of babysitting for grandson Wyatt the weekend before. And yes%2C off the record%2C he expressed his disappointment and disagreement with certain actions of the Bush administration -- some of which he fears will have serious%2C long-term consequences. %0D%0A%0D%0AEven when pressed%2C however%2C Gore said he was not yet ready to go public. And he explained why%3A %22After 25 years in public service%2C I%27m enjoying making a contribution in other ways%3A teaching and writing. Whether I%27m ever a candidate again or not%2C I will reenter the public arena someday. But I won%27t make a decision until I%27ve given it enough distance to know the time is right.%22 %0D%0A%0D%0ABut%2C surely%2C I argued%2C Bush had done wrong on some issues that were dear to Gore%27s heart. How could he remain silent when Bush junked the Kyoto treaty%2C or refused to regulate CO2%2C or announced plans to destroy the Alaskan wilderness%3F He%27s Mr. Environment. Why didn%27t he at least speak out on Earth Day%3F %0D%0A%0D%0AGore held firm. %22No one would be surprised by what I think about what he%27s done in regard to global warming%2C or the economy%2C%22 he assured me%2C %22but I%27ve made a decision that now is not yet the time to speak out.%22 %0D%0A%0D%0AYou have to respect Gore%27s decision. No one can be forced to take on a role he doesn%27t feel in his gut. But%2C at the same time%2C you have to regret it. Because%2C in Gore%27s silence%2C there%27s no other voice in the Democratic party who is speaking%2C or can speak%2C with national authority. Bill Clinton can%27t%2C yet. Think Marc Rich. Tom Daschle and Dick Gephardt are superb leaders%2C but their influence doesn%27t go far beyond Capitol Hill. Strong Democratic senators like John Kerry%2C Joe Lieberman%2C John Edwards%2C Joe Biden and Evan Bayh are too busy running for president themselves. %0D%0A%0D%0AIt%27s clear that%2C as its former standard bearer%2C the man to lead the party and speak out on the issues -- is Al Gore. It%27s also clear there%27s a risk for him to wait much longer. %0D%0A%0D%0AIf Al Gore doesn%27t step up to the plate soon%2C someone else will. Then%2C when Gore finally does speak out%2C no one will be listening. %0D%0A%0D%0A 62|7|Thanks|joanski0||07:29:48|05/17/2001|Thanks for the good post%2C Dusty. It%27s not what I wanted to hear %28Gore%27s not ready to come out yet%29%2C but hopefully he%27ll be ready soon. 65|1|John Kerry|ludwigb||17:50:13|05/25/2001|%0D%0AFrom what I%27ve seen and read%2C he is the most articulate%2C compelling Democrat out there%2C and had hoped Gore would pick him in 2000. He%27s my ideal canidate %28so far%29 for 2004. He%27s tall and presidential looking. He%27s a decorated war hero. He%27s articulate and passionate and knowledgeable about the most important issues--like environmental and foriegn policy issues. He has the expirience to be president %28unlike Edwards%2C although he is probably the 2nd best pick from what I%27ve seen%29. The only problem with him is that he comes from a rich family and he%27s Skull and Bones. But politics is a national business now--it%27s not like John Edwards would have been able to carry North Carolina for Gore. Kerry is simply a compelling man who would actually beat Dick Cheney in a debate.%0D%0AHere%27s a memo by Josh Marshall that articulates some of these points...%0D%0Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.salon.com%2Fpolitics%2Ffeature%2F2000%2F07%2F20%2Fkerry%2Findex.html %0D%0AAlthough I agree with Liebermann about 90%25 of the time on policy%2C but I still find him a little slimy and I find his moralism annoying and disturbing%2C so I won%27t support him for president in 2004. I%27ll vote for the other guy. 81|2|Re%3A John Kerry|wicket||13:28:33|06/20/2001|I hope so too%2C I really like this guy. I still think that things would have been different had Gore picked him instead of Lieberman. Yeah%2C other folks should be able to pull a win off too%2C but Al Gore is the guy who will motivate Democrats to come to the polls. Revenge%2C is a pretty darn good motivator%2C ya know%3F %2Agrins%2A%0D%0A%0D%0AAs for the VP. Contrary to the media theories about Lieberman positioning himself to run for president%2C my opinion is that he is gearing up to run with Al Gore as Vice President.%0D%0A%0D%0AFor all of us who want to set the history books right about the stolen election%2C an Al Gore run would be the only way to do it. Also%2C my belief about Al Gore is his speech at the DNC was from the heart and was what he truly believes. However%2C I place most of the blame directly on Ralph Nader for the lack of enthusiasm that the media portrayed as part of its story. Ralph Nader ran a campaign that only helped Bush%27s. Bush was trying to look like a Democrat while Al Gore was trying to expose Bush%27s stances for what they truely are%3A dishonest. Nader%27s lie about the two parties being the same one helped keep Gore from being able to show his differences from Bush.%0D%0A%0D%0AAnd you know what really ticks me off about Nader%3F When Bush%27s campaign played commercials in various states on behalf of Nader%2C Nader didn%27t denounce the %2Abasically%2A free corporate money that he was getting from the Repugs. Nader%27s credibility is not good. I don%27t trust the guy. %28Don%27t forget that Nader said during the campaign that it wouldn%27t be a problem if if Bush appointed one of his right-wing idelogues to the Supreme Court%2C because abortion rights would just reset back to the states%2C then.%29%0D%0A%0D%0AAnyway%2C Gore%2FLieberman. Same signs. Same stances as the ones he layed out during the DNC. He could even run on the same tax cuts that he ran on before %28and try to replace Bush%27s retro tax cut with his progressive one%29 along with paying down the %28even bigger%29 national debt. By then we should be just about to run short of funds heading into deficits due to Bush%27s backloaded tax cut.%0D%0A%0D%0AHeck%2C lets not win by a margin too large to steal.
