Here's the latest Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee letter from Nancy Pelosi:Dear DCCC Member,
As the newly elected House Democratic Leader, there are two things I want you to know:
The first is that I am committed to doing everything in my power to stand up for Democratic values and ideas.
The second is that I can't possibly succeed without your energy, your financial generosity, and your passionate commitment to our Party's ideals.
As you know, I am the first woman in history to lead either party in the House or Senate. I didn't run as a woman. I ran as a seasoned legislator and experienced politician. It just so happens that I am a woman, and we have been waiting a long time to achieve this success. I'm so proud to be a Democrat and so proud that our Party is responsible for this historic first.
And it's no accident that contacting you is one of the first steps I have taken in my new role. You are a loyal and committed supporter of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) -- someone we have been able to rely on through thick and thin.
As I know you realize, we have our work cut out for us in the coming months. We have to stop an emboldened Republican Congress and White House from running roughshod over the policies we support and the values we cherish.
The principle we will follow is a simple one:
If the Republicans propose fair, sensible and forward-looking policies, we will find common ground.
But when they advance reckless and destructive ideas, we will stand our ground.
The Republican Party campaigned as if they support our values. Now, they are systematically advancing a divisive agenda that would undermine those values.
You and I can't let them get away with it.
Because neither the margin of their victories nor the content of their campaigns justifies the mandate the GOP is trying to claim.
During the campaign, they claimed to support environmental values. After the campaign, they're plotting a speedy and far-reaching assault on the environment including a relentless campaign to despoil some of our greatest national treasures.
During the campaign, they made a show of aligning themselves with the economic concerns of working families. After the campaign, they're huddling with powerful special interests to hatch a new round of special breaks that serve the well connected at the expense of the rest of us.
During the campaign, nary a word was spoken about their divisive social agenda. After the campaign, right-wing social activists are coming out of the woodwork to demand control of the courts, and further rollbacks on a woman's right to choose and civil liberties.
As Democrats, our course is clear. We must have the courage of our convictions, never yielding to Republican efforts to lead our country in the wrong direction.
And we must have faith in our ideals, never forgetting our reponsibility to advance positive ideas -- even in the most difficult of political circumstances.
Make no mistake about it. Elections have consequences. The 2002 elections that left the Republicans in control of the House, the Senate and the White House have made our work far more difficult. And our financial resources are completely tapped out.
But I pledge to you that if I can count on your continued support, I will do everything I can to make our differences clear and win over voters. And that work starts today.
Being the first woman Leader in the House is like being the Thanksgiving turkey, you bring it out, you get this great honor, everybody exclaims how wonderful, we have a woman leader in the party, and then they begin to carve you up.
The fact is, I won -- we won -- on the strength of legislative and electoral accomplishments, and no matter how low the opposition may stoop to demean this historic achievement, I know I can succeed because I have you on my side.
That's why your contribution to the DCCC today means so much to me personally as we build on this historic victory.
And I'm ready to fight for Democratic values with everything I've got. I know you're ready to do the same. So, let's go to work. Let me hear from you now.
Sincerely,
Nancy Pelosi
Democratic Leader
P.S. As Republicans move quickly to press their extreme agenda, we must have the resources to counter them. Please, send an urgent contribution to the DCCC today.
