Spiritual healthcare comes to Congress

Backed by some of the most powerful members of the most powerful members of the Senate, a little-noticed provision in the healthcare overhaul bill would require insurers to consider covering Christian Science prayer treatments as medical expenses/

The provision was inserted by Sen. Orrin Hatch, with the support of Sens. Kerry and the late Ted Kennedy, both of Massachusetts, home to the headquarters of the Church of Crist, Scientist. While not mentioning the church by name, it would prohibit discrimination against "religious and spiritual healthcare."

It has nevertheless stirred an intense controversy over the controversy over the the constitutional separation of church and state, and the possibility that other churches might seek reimbursements for so-called spiritual healing.

Two committees in the House voted to include the measure in their versions of the overhaul, but Nancy Pelosi stripped in out from the consolidated House bill last week after a few members argued it was unconstitutional.

There is a lot more in the article, but I was astounded at this. Kerry and Kennedy?? It appears that it has the potential to be put back in the bill. Also saw this on Raw Story. Is anyone as upset about this as I am? In fact, I'm beyond upset!
