Tips and Tricks on posting with your friends, the square brackets:
Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 08:08 AM by Make7

The square brackets are on your keyboard to the right of the P key.

Square brackets are special characters in a message board post. It signals the board that you are giving directions for formatting, not text for display.

Though you can't see it, I've typed "left bracket"i"right bracket" at the beginning of this sentence. i for "italics". When I'm done typing, I'll put "/i" in square brackets to signal a stop to italics. Easy HTML!

Similarly b in brackets makes the resulting text bold. The same slash mark in the brackets /b cancels it.

Therefore, you cannot use square brackets in a posting. They will not show up, and depending on what follows them, might cause some strange results.

To make a gray "talk box", you preface the text inside with "div class=talk" (brackets replacing quotation marks) and end with /div in brackets.

Tip: when you're composing a post, click on the link labelled 'HTML look-up table' to display a table of the most common formatting codes.

This links to DU Home Page by putting (left bracket)|This links to DU Home Page(right bracket)

The vertical line (|) is a shifted backslash (\) -- two keys to the right of the semicolon key your pinky is probably resting on.

Whatever comes after | (until your closing right bracket) will masquerade as the url after "link:". The url should omit "http:/ /"

Great tips, especially for those unfamiliar with HTML. Here are some more:

In the tips below, brackets are replaced by curly braces to simulate html/forum code.

  • What is opened must be closed. That is, if you open a tag, for example for bold, {b} you must close at the end of where you want the bold text: {/b}. Otherwise, all text that follows will be bold
  • It's good practice not to leave a space between a tag and the following text; for example: {b}This is bold text{/b}
  • You can combine tags. For example, this would color the text red, and bold it: {font color="red"}{b}This is red, bold text.{/b}{/font}
  • If you're familiar with HTML, the only difference is: use the brackets instead of the greater/lesser signs normally used. The only exception is embedding links, explained above.

Umm... you guys have all seen this page, right?
