I need suggestions for series that aren't so incredibly violent.
We have been watching MI-5 and Dexter. While interesting, I find the violence disturbing. Would love to have some suggestions for other series that would cool things off a bit. I like drama, comdey, quirky stuff.

thanks in advance.

1. Doctor Who
Hehe, can't go wrong with The Doctor ;)

Doctor Who: Season 1
(2005) TV-PG

More than 15 years after "Doctor Who" went off the airwaves, the venerable sci-fi series got a well-received 21st-century makeover, complete with younger actors, modern editing and vibrant CGI animation. In the revamped show's first season, the Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) gets a new sidekick -- a department store clerk named Rose (British pop star Billie Piper) -- and travels to Victorian England to help a beleaguered Charles Dickens.

Genre: TV Sci-Fi & Fantasy, TV Action & Adventure, British TV
This show is: Suspenseful, Witty

14. More sci-fi, action, unspoken romance drama
with human condition aspects than an historical piece. :P

I enjoyed the entire series and still wait for new ones as they come out.

:)

3. "Arrested Development"
I watch almost no tv, per se. But my nephew suggested this series. One of the funniest, off-beat shows ever. Warning, you'll be hooked.

4. I've been watching some of that and the early episodes of The Office (British version)
I like them both and put them on for laughs and entertainment. Only problem is, my husband says my laughing is interfering with his writing and reading (I wear headphones and I am sure it really is disruptive to him).

5. Have you seen 'Doc Martin'?
It's a British series about a top London Surgeon who takes a position as as a Family Doctor in a tiny Cornish village because he develops a phobia to blood. It's comedic drama and absolutely hysterically funny. The first 4 seasons are on Netflix (season 5 is being filmed now). It's the best comedy out of Britain in years.

Also, there are many British 'costume dramas' to stream - Dickens (Our Mutual Friend, Little Dorrit, Bleak House, etc), Austen (Pride & Prejudice etc).

'A Touch of Frost' is an excellent crime drama with very little (if any) gore - 15 seasons to keep you amused.

Suggest looking under 'British TV' and 'British Drama' there a goldmine of good viewing waiting there.

7. Great suggestions. My husband is English, so these are some that he will also really enjoy.
Thanks so much!

I will start with Doc Martin. We have seen some wonderful Masterpiece mini-series when we get actual TV reception and I will look for more of those. I also loved The Tudors (except for the head chopping parts).

Husband loves crime drama, but I need less violence, so will check out the Touch of Frost recommendation as well.

Thanks again.

9. I'm sure you've seen the Inspector Morse series
Not really violent. But extremely well done. Also "Foyle's War" was great. I've only seen the first seasson, but it takes place during WWII in England. Not violent at all.

10. Seen Foyle's War and really liked it. Will check out Inspector Morse.
This is great, because we go long periods of time without mail or real TV. I am loving the whole streaming thing.

So check out "A Touch of Frost", another great show with an irascible English police detective.

29. If you like the British detectives, add George Gently, Inspector Lewis, and
Inspector Lynley to your list - none are particularly violent, and all are great. Although I think at the moment the only ones of those that are streaming are some of the Lynleys...

30. A Touch of Frost is one of my all-time favorites
I first discovered it back in the 1990s when A&E was not the true crime channel it is now but specialized in British and Australian dramas and arts programmin.

11. Another vote for 'Inspector Morse'
I had a 'thing' for John Thaw for years, ever since he was in 'The Sweeney' back when I was still in England (the '70's?).

He's a brilliant actor and I was devastated when he died. I saw the series years ago. Does Netflix have them all? I can't access my 'Instant Viewing' from here (Canada)

21. If you like sketch style humor with some intelligence to back it up, try A Bit of Fry and Laurie.
Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry have short sketches that focus on word play and mannerisms.

Occasionally, I do have to look up who or what they are referring to because this is a British series from around 1989 through sometime in the mid- 1990s.

No case is too daunting for Veronica, but when it comes to navigating the perils of high school -- such as avoiding her ex (Teddy Dunn) -- she must stumble through it all like her peers.

31. It's difficult to sustain a teeny bopper series
(Kristen was 24 when she was playing a 17-year-old.)

However, this series had so much going for it, I think they could have transcended the teen limitations. By the third season they had her in college and she had her P.I. license. It would have been a simple matter in season 4 to have skipped a few years and turned her into an independent adult.

Glee, on the other hand, has a very limited venue. So limited that I only bothered to watch the first season.
