SAN FRANCISCO — US software giant Microsoft beat the expectations of Wall Street analysts on Thursday despite the weak market for personal computers.

The Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft said net profit rose 31 percent to $5.23 billion in the third quarter of its fiscal year while revenue increased 13 percent to $16.43 billion.

Earnings per share of 61 cents were better than the 56 cents forecast by analysts.

3. Apple’s beats Microsoft profits for first time in 20 years
Two great news reports concerning Apple Computer’s profitability and popularity.

The Guardian has reported that for the first time in 20 years, Apple’s quarterly profits and revenues ($6 billion and $24.7 billion respectively) were greater than Microsoft’s ($5.2 billion and $16.4 billion, respectively). The reason for this is the decline in popularity of laptop and desktop computers, since Microsoft gets half of its profits from Windows licenses, as well as Bing recording a loss of $726 million. However, Windows 8 will be coming in September. That should have support for tablets, so time will tell if Apple can maintain its lead.

8. Nokia's profits come from selling phones.

Apple sells mobile computing products, which I think is a totally pretentious term but we have seen iPad figures starting to eat into low-powered Windows netbook markets.

And of course Microsoft's profits mostly come from the licensing of that piece of crap they still manage to drag out onto showroom floors with a nice polish and wax job every 3 years.

9. That is one reason why their profits are higher
They have had success in other products, while microsoft has failed

5. Windows 8? The keep stuffing more and more gigabytes of programs most people never use.
How much memory will this version use up loading stuff in the back ground in case you might want to use it some day, maybe?

11. Thats a phony concern.
Memory is dirt cheap these days and newer machines are going to have more and more of it, and not just because of Windows but because of all major software suites. They all grow and add features. Some useful, some not. But the things people use their computers for grows all the time and memory and other hardware power is going to continue to grow with it.

12. No it is not. All that unused crap in memory make that part of memory useless for what you are doing
Plus it slows down the computer. Not everyone can afford a quad core 4 gig just to make the word processor fast enough to keep up.
This is one reason why Windows is so bloated. If you don't pre-load whatever, it takes a while to spool it off the hard drive when you do want to use it.

14. You have a very antiquated view on computing.

There is no arguing with someone when thats where they are coming from.

You act like someone with an existing machine that doesn't want to spend a little to upgrade also HAS to upgrade to a newer, more resource intensive version of Windows, which is not at all the case in the first place.

10. They fully deserve it. Their software never, ever crashes.
And they would never, ever produce software capable of generating crap messages like "An Unknown Error Has Occurred".

Keep up the good work, Microsoft!
