3. When I first moved to Kansas nearly 21 years ago,
I learned that Tornado Alley moves slowly from the southern end (Texas) north to the Dakotas and back again. I can't recall what the time sequence was. But Tornado Alley was never considered to include where all those tornadoes have hit most recently.

4. You can tell those people aren't used to tornadoes
It just seems so bizarre that tornado alley has moved.

6. I believe it's due to the seasonal relative movement of the Ferrel (SP?)cell
Edited on Fri Apr-29-11 05:58 AM by HereSince1628
aka mid latitude cell, and the jet streams. The position of the Hadley cell, the Ferrel cell and the Arctic cell is due to solar inputs and so the position of the Ferrel/mid-latitude cell (whose surface facing side involves much of the weather over the lower 48) moves relatively northward in the first half of the year due to the tilt of the earth, it then moves back southward after the summer solstice.

The northern side of the mid-latitude cell has a persistent low which tends to create stormy weather and it's southern side has a persistent high pressure which tends to be fair weather.

11. It's rare for them to touch down in a populated area
But I do remember the Ruskin tornado in 1957. It's one of my earliest memories. I was 3. I can still remember my mom taking us down to the basement. That was a horrific tornado.

7. You've got all summer. If you want my next one, I'll gladly send it your way...
Unfortunately, I have a feeling it won't care if I tell it where to go.

10. northern illinois`s tornado season is usually is in may but...
it`s the end of april and it`s still below normal temps with above normal rainfall. unless nature switches to on we might have a cool wet spring going into an unknown summer...

no one is in the fields.
