Our inner city supermarket has reopened!
After more than a year, we once more have a major supermarket, bringing fresh produce, meats, poultry and fish to our no-longer "food desert" in New Haven!

New Haven actually pioneered one of the first supermarket chain stores to open in an inner city in the nation. An activist group of Yale Law School students helped with the implementation of Shaw's supermarket in the late 90s. In March 2010, the Shaw chain closed all their stores in Connecticut. This store, which had employed many neighborhood residents, sat empty, while other Shaw's around the state found new owners quickly. Many of us who live in New Haven were in despair over the loss and were fearful that the store would not be able to attract a new owner in the current recession.

Community activists rose to the occasion and worked diligently to find a new owner. Stop and Shop stepped up. They are re-hiring former Shaw employees of the store. And there was much celebration in the city on the store's re-opening on April 15th. I applaud Stop and Shop for being a good citizen of our city!
