Required 'keepsake' ultrasound photos for women who want abortions
Republican ultrasound bill puts new restrictions on abortion

Senator David Robertson (R-Grand Blanc Twp.) has introduced a bill that would require doctors to offer keepsake ultrasound photos to women who are seeking abortions.

The bill requires that doctors perform an ultrasound, offer a description of the ultrasound image, an opportunity to listen to the heartbeat of the embryo or fetus, and a hard copy of the image.

All of this is to be done at least two hours before the abortion procedure and women would be required to sign a statement acknowledging that these offers had been made.
----------------

“Any women who wants to look at the screen should be able to,” she said. “But what we are seeing is that women are being forced to sit there … Some laws are not even clear that she is allowed to put her fingers in her ears.”

Being pressured to view an ultrasound could be traumatic.

1. Oh great.
Let's make the men who want vasectomies look at a sample of their sperm too.

Under a microscope.

So they can see just what they're killing.

It makes about as much sense.

In case you were wondering, I am pissed off.

3. Perhaps put the sperm in a little glass vial for men to wear around their necks?

7. Hey, perfect!
That could be a sign that the guy was sterile, since he'd had a vasectomy!

Oh god.

2. Do they do this before appendix removals? And if not, is there some disparity...
...worth looking into?

9. No matter what
an appendix will never develop into a living person. It's a invalid argument.

11. But until it does develop into a living person, it's no more special than an appendix.
Or the individual sperm and egg cells which come together to create it.

19. No matter what, forcing a woman to see ultrasounds is an invalid policy.

16. There would be no need to
Even the farthest-right anti-abortion zealot is okay with appendix removals.

4. It might be fun if all of the women seeking abortion told the doctor they were deaf.
Playing the "heartbeat" would be uselessly frustrating.

5. Keepsake used tampons, too, in case of early spontaneous abortions?
Edited on Mon Apr-25-11 08:06 PM by REP
What if a woman had been pregnant, aborted spontaneously and didn't even know it - just thought she had a slightly heavier period? It happens to nearly 90% of sexually active women!

6. Why not make them take the parasitic tissue home in a collectible beer stein?

8. maybe it's
a ploy to make people spend money for the ultrasound. Who provides this?

10. Ahh. More fetus fetishists.
Perhaps someone should ask Senator Robertson if there's anything at all more important to deal with in Michigan right now. Really. I'm sure the unemployment mess has all been cleaned up, for instance, if this is how he chooses to spend his days.

I am grateful to be of an age where pregnancy is no longer a consideration, but I am fearful for women who have no idea what is being taken from them on a daily basis.

18. To men like Robertson, NOTHING is more important
than this. The unemployment situation absolutely pales in comparison. Women are making decisions that he doesn't approve of and dammit, it has to be stopped!

Besides, if women would just stay home like they're supposed to, the unemployment problem would solve itself.

14. Was a thread here a couple of days ago...
that made the claim that investigations into the climbing numbers of autistic children being born might be due partially to excessive ultrasounds. This is not what women should be exposed to.

13. How about doing a karyotype after the abortion, identifying it,
Edited on Mon Apr-25-11 08:58 PM by undeterred
and publishing the picture of it in the local newspaper (under the father's name)?

15. this whole plan is asinine
but the story says they will "offer" a description, etc. after the ultrasound. it doesn't sound like they would force someone to take them up on it.

This is ridiculous.
