Roosevelt’s “Four Freedoms”
Via FOK News...

Answer: No snark here: take five minutes and watch this extraordinary vignette from American history – an FDR inauguration of 60 years ago, in which he declared “The Four Freedoms” filmed, in perfect color, by his son-in-law. You’ll see everybody from his son Jimmy in military uniform, walking him to the podium, to the first lady, to Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes in a judicial cap that makes him look like a French magistrate. The audio of the speech is here.

1. Wow, thanks for that!
Love the seconds of him speaking. Look at those head movements, its like is every spoken word is a pen stroke, written boldy on the page of history. They just don't seem to make them like that anymore.

3. yep
In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms.

o The first is freedom of speech and expression—everywhere in the world.

o The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way—everywhere in the world.

o The third is freedom from want—which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants—everywhere in the world.

o The fourth is freedom from fear—which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor—anywhere in the world.

That is no vision of a distant millennium. It is a definite basis for a kind of world attainable in our own time and generation. That kind of world is the very antithesis of the so-called new order of tyranny which the dictators seek to create with the crash of a bomb.

6. That was the tragedy of the McCarthy Era as it threatened at least two of those
listed freedoms.

5. The only way we can 'compete' with countries that do not have these four fundamental freedoms
Is to lose them ourselves.

Just remember that.

K&R.

7. Here is FDR's Second Bill of Rights. We need it to fight the GOP.
Edited on Tue Apr-26-11 12:00 AM by freshwest
Franklin Delano Roosevelt proposed a Second Bill of Rights in a speech on January 11, 1944. This was an Economic Bill of Rights, designed to stop the kind of fascism we are facing now.

Take your pick.

9. Where have you gone, Franklin Roosevelt?
Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you....

Truly there were once were giants on the earth.
