New concerns over swine flu jab after children given it 'hit by sudden sleep syndrome'
A swine flu vaccine which has been given to thousands of children in Britain may cause the sleep disorder narcolepsy.

Symptoms include excessive daytime sleepiness and nodding off suddenly without warning.

All packets of the vaccine Pandemrix will have to carry a warning about the risk following a ruling by the EU regulator, the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

Caroline Hadfield, of Frome, Somerset, believes her five-year-old son Joshua contracted narcolepsy after being vaccinated with Pandemrix last January.

Within weeks of having the jab, Joshua began sleeping 18 hours a day and Mrs Hadfield says his personality completely changed.

1. Too bad, these drug companies need to make profits
by scaring people with words like Pandemic.

Too bad, ignorant people root for preventable death.

I have always wanted to ask someone like you, even in the age of vaccinations do you even realize how many people die from influenza in the US alone each year?

4. Yeah, and it's a good idea to read the entire article, too,
where you will find out what the incidence of this is. If you compare that with the death rate of kids who contract flu, it's very interesting. Did you do that?

Information is good. Complete information is better.

Edited on Sun Apr-24-11 02:45 PM by MineralMan
Uff da! I'm on the same side you are. The facts demonstrate the importance of being vaccinated. For pete's sake!

13. It does, indeed. So it's not like it's hidden.
There are a number of possible side-effects of these vaccines. It's a risk that most people are willing to take to protect themselves and their children from the much higher risk of catching the flu. The known side-effects are disclosed, so people can make up their own minds. That's what I do. Then I get the shot, every year like clockwork.

15. Then this article is a
good thing to educate parents.

My mother would have known not to get me that vaccine if she had information that it could cause narcolepsy. Her other 4 children would probably be fine, but I have always, always had bad reactions to drugs and vaccines.

I had never heard about that possible side effect until I read this post.

8. Not as scary as dying from H1N1, though.
It hits kids really hard, you know. When I compare the risk of dying with the tiny risk of narcolepsy, it's pretty clear which way I'll go. You may do as you please, though.

10. No one is denying the worth of vaccinations.
We are merely skeptical of Big Pharma's enormous influence in hyping these scares for profit. It's naive to think profit has nothing to do with it.

12. And who do you suppose is going to make those millions of
doses, I wonder? It's not bathtub science, you know. Of course there's profit in it. There's profit in all manufacturing.

Someone has to make this stuff. Uff da!

29. However, in the old days, circa the fifties and sixties,
The vaccine laboratories were clean places. Not dens of filth and slime and bacteria. And vaccines were tested for many years before being sprung on the public.

Now they whip up a vaccine for some purpose and start injecting it with less than six months of testing.

San Francisco Chronicle, circa 2000, did a whole mini series about how scummy these places are. And the inspectors are very few and the inspections don't occur very often. Even though the labs know ahead of time the inspectors are coming in, they still fail the inspection.

16. Why do you presume to talk to people like this? I will do as I please with or without your approval.
Edited on Sun Apr-24-11 03:08 PM by LaurenG
Just to clue you in you are talking to someone who supervises those who give vaccines. I run a medical clinic.
It may not have been from the vaccine to start with and having your child suddenly sleep 18 hours a day is awful and scary.

You really don't have to come off like this you know. geez.

26. I have no idea who you are. I merely pointed out that
contracting H1N1 is very serious for many children. If you read on, you'll see stories from two such people. Did you expect me to know what you do for a living? You expressed horror at this rare side effect. I pointed out that there are other horrors for those who are not vaccinated.

We disagree with each other, apparently. There it is.

I presume nothing. I say what is on my mind.

28. You assumed plenty though and what's odd is that we do agree and
you seem not to get that. I did not express horror, you read into that all by yourself. I don't expect you to know me but you certainly assumed that I was anti vaccine by my short comment "Yikes that is scary." It is scary, no mom wants to have her child have narcolepsy, and no nurse wants to have given that vaccine and no drug company wants to manufacture a vaccine that will harm people. It's scary not horrifying. Hopefully it's not related to the injection. Hopefully we can all go back to having a nice Sunday evening now.

17. My kid has never been the same since she contracted H1N1.
She contracted it three weeks before the vaccine went public. It did a number on her immune system-she was out for nearly a month with H1N1 and its complications alone, not to mention how easily she caught every single bug that went around afterward.

Nearly two years later and she still catches everything that goes around. Personally, I think it weakened her immune system for good. After our experience I'd recommend the vaccine, just so another family doesn't have to deal with this.

19. A friend of mine's a few years into recovering from it too
He caught it around the same time; spent a good six weeks in a coma, had some complications from that that led to nerve damage, and is hoping to get rid of his cane sometime this summer.

23. Hers developed into pneumonia.
She was a regionally ranked swimmer-very good and had lots of promise. After that, she's never been quite as strong, lost some lung capacity, etc. It was never as bad as a coma and nerve damage-just constantly sick and never quite getting over it.

She's sick today.

31. Yeah, the same thing happened to my friend, too
Considering he was in his twenties and in otherwise fine health at the time it was kind of scary. I got knocked flat for about two days by the vaccine, but I'll take that over most of the alternatives..

and in great shape for her age. It knocked her flat.

If the vaccine had been an option at that time she would have been first on the list.

25. No, it was H1N1.
She spent time in a children's hospital, where they sent off the tests to the state department of health.

The state confirmed the diagnosis. The children's hospital stated that her immunity might have been compromised, since she was sick so often after H1N1. The also said she wasn't the only child they saw with problems like hers.

11. The problem is that warnings can only tell of a statistical possibility, BUT
when it happens to YOUR child, it's always 100%..

and of course, lawsuits are probably not much real help, if they takes a decade to litigate, and the only ones getting much from them are the lawyers.

Almost everything we come into contact in life "may" harm us at a future time (sooner or later), and the compounding of all of them or some of them may be the tipping point when something terrible starts happening inside us.. We are complex creatures, and no one comes with an owner's manual, where all the maximum exposures are listed for us.

No one ever wants to be (or to have their child be) a statistic, but sometimes they are..it;s just that simple.. Life is random, and sometimes bad things happen..Parents can only try their best to mitigate damage to their offspring, but no matter how hard we try, we cannot always protect them from everything. :(

14. The statistical possibility of your child dying in an auto accident
is far higher. Life's risky. As long as you know what the risks are, you deal with it. With vaccines, the risks are known. The risk of catching the flu is another risk to be weighed. Most people choose vaccination. I know I do.

18. A Lot of the scary ones were not available when my kids were young..
and I am glad for that..

As a military child, I got every vaccine known to man (at the time), and luckily, nothing bad happened except for the HUGE smallpox scar I have on my upper thigh :)

When my own were kids, they gave vaccines one at a time, and with an interval... I think that may be safer....less of an assault on a little one's immune system

either or if there was my parents didn't go in for them. All I ever had was the polio ones and I always was and still am healthy as a horse.
