Wikileaks cable from 2001 reveals Vatican ok with war.
http://www.wikileaks.ch/cable/2001/11/01VATICAN5960.htm...

1. (C) SUMMARY: VATICAN CRITICISM OF THE WAR EFFORT IS NOW LESS LIKELY, ACCORDING TO THE VATICAN AFGHANISTAN DESK OFFICER, SINCE ADVANCES BY THE U.S.-LED COALITION FACILITATE A MORE EFFECTIVE RESPONSE TO AFGHANISTAN'S HUMANITARIAN CRISIS THAN ANTICIPATED.

4. (C) MONTEMAYOR EXPRESSED PERSONAL SATISFACTION AT THE PROGRESS OF THE U.S.-LED CAMPAIGN HOWEVER HE REITERATED THE VATICAN'S HUMANITARIAN CONCERNS.

Apparently the war was working well in regards to Vatican interests. Happy Easter from an agnostic brit.

1. It's never been an entirely pacifist organisation
And look at the criticism (justified, IMO) it got for not being more anti-Nazi. The concept of a 'just war' is old, and worth discussing.

2. in their defense, they did condemn the Iraq War
But the holy seal of approval or disapproval on anything doesn't really influence me.

3. I've always wondered if there was any linkage between the yearlong
blitz of pedophile stories that were in the news in the early 2000's and the RCC's complete silence on the Bush run-up to war in Iraq. Unlike VietNam, the Church seemed to lose its voice on this unjustifiable act of aggression...I think they were effectively neutralized and sidelined on the Bush War blitz in 2002.

5. The war against Afghanistan was viewed as self-defense,
and the Catholic Church has always held that a war in self-defense can be justified.

The Church did not, however, support the war in Iraq.
