If you could change the DU backdrop color to something less brilliant than 1000 watt
white to save energy, would you? There are several shades I might like as an alternative to snow on a sunny day. I would make a choice using a color chooser such as this one.

1. Wonderful idea!
Consider the energy savings in just that one change!

23. Actually the energy savings with LCD might even be worse than white, however
I like this.

2. Being a person with certain optical limitations
I prefer a high intensity page, if it couldn't be white I'd prefer an intense yellow or yellow-green.

5. Well your prefs are stored in your cookies and it's done on your end not on
DU's end so there really wouldn't be any problem. All they have to do it put a color chooser on the options page and it's done.

12. Actually, given the choice, I might go with a very light Blue/green
shade. I think some posters don't understand it would be their option, to exercise or not.

13. Yes, because most of us are unaware of how said change
could happen.

What else can you expect of us who are ignorant of what is involved?

3. On an LCD display, it doesn't matter much what color the background is.
Edited on Sat Apr-23-11 07:15 PM by Tesha
For many LCD displays, the backlight intensity (and
power consumption) is the same no matter what is on
display. And for other LCD displays (the ones that
quote some ridiculous contrast ratio owing to "Dynamic
Contrast Ratio" or whatever marketing-speak they use),
if there's a single white pixel on the screen, the
backlight will still be at full intensity.

Only LCDs with dynamic contrast *AND* a zoned backlight
will save any energy with a dimmer background.

CRT and OLED displays, on the other hand...

39. You can measure...
A energy difference between colours. Mind you it's only like 0.01 watt.

41. If you can measure it, you're better than most.
As I said, *FOR MOST LCDs*. there is no logic at all
that affects the intensity of the backlight with
changes in the displayed pattern.

And the LCD itself doesn't draw any significantly-
different power whether it's displaying transparent
cells or opaque cells.

Turn your brightness down one step and you'll be
saving a lot more than 0.01 watts.

6. No thank you. Those of us with poor vision wouldn't find it useful
However, there is a brightness adjustment on your very own monitor.

I suggest you use that instead of fucking up the site for the sight handicapped.

Thank you.

9. Fucking up the site? Good one, the only site that would change is the one
in front of each person who chooses to pick their own backdrop. Nothing on the site itself would change. It would remain as it is. You would never even know it happened, sort of like the radiation blowing around the country right now.

I posted the above before I read the upthread posts about it being an individual thing. I have no problem with it if I can keep mine the way it is.

15. Thank you for that, I use Ubuntu and Firefox, will be looking at the world through
rose colored pixels in a moment.

http://ecoiron.blogspot.com/2007/01/black-pixels-are-ne...

Take at look at Google, who gets about 200 million queries a day. Let's assume each query is displayed for about 10 seconds; that means Google is running for about 550,000 hours every day on some desktop. Assuming that users run Google in full screen mode, the shift to a black background will save a total of 15 (74-59) watts. That turns into a global savings of 8.3 Megawatt-hours per day, or about 3000 Megawatt-hours a year. Now take into account that about 25 percent of the monitors in the world are CRTs, and at 10 cents a kilowatt-hour, that's $75,000, a goodly amount of energy and dollars for changing a few color codes.

17. I like it white because it blends in with all my other
legit work screens in my 9-5 M-F life ;) After I scroll up past the header, it's pretty unnoticeable (except during fund drives). My title bar is unreadable (I set that to a fine script ;) so my nosey coworkers can't easily read my title bars over my shoulder.

26. Black actually uses more energy on an LCD monitor.
The white background issue only applied to CRTs, which are rapidly being replaced. Due to differences in how the technology produces colors, black actually uses about 6% more energy.

31. I might possibly be willing
to change from pure white to some light colored background. But as I get older, I need a good contrast between background and the print to be able to read it. That's something young people don't understand, and there are things out there that are difficult to impossible for me to read because there's not enough contrast for my aging eyes.

I use black for background and light green for text. Other combinations are just as attractive and easy (perhaps easier to read than black on white) to read.

35. If you're using an LCD or DLP monitor it doesn't matter
Your lamp is on regardless.

I reverse the screen to help my TV stay cool, because if it overheats it shuts itself off, but that doesn't do a thing for the brightness of the lamp itself.

I'm fairly certain the energy output of any monitor remains the same no matter what color is displayed on the screen, so there's no point in changing the color- you're still going to use the same amount of energy regardless.

I'm measured before and every LCD I've tested uses the least amount of energy displaying white and the most while displaying dark colours. Unlike CRTs which are the exact opposite.
