4. Thanks for the link!
I do North American Indian tours in a natural history museum, and while these were "staged" in some respect, they do reveal real people doing everyday tasks, illuminating a rich heritage of our continenet.

of the Little Bighorn, after meeting and photographing Native American survivors of the battle.

But not in 2011. I have been to Point Reyes, Mount Diablo, San Luis National Wildlife Refuge, and all are great. One of my photos of the Mount Diablo Fairy Lantern was used in an article in a science magazine.

I especially like #54 the Klamath Indian Chief overlooking Crater Lake Oregon. I was also struck by how late this particular photo was shot.

These images strike me as important as they've captured some of the last moments of real day-to-day native american life. Wow.

37. I am in love with the Edward Curtis photographs.
I know all about his work with photographing the vanishing Native American tribes and his many volumes of photographs. They depict the very best of life by Native Americans.

If I could ever afford the thirty-fifty thousand dollars per volume of his photo essays, I would gladly pay it and proudly display them.

Were it not for Curtis, this history would be forever lost.

53. Wow, that is the largest and diverse collection of Curtis photographs I've seen at one source
Back in the sixties, we had an art gallery in town that sold original (and pricey) Curtis prints, all sepia brown, and almost exclusively from the plains. No Southwest, Alaska or Pacific Northwest prints at all.

Number 100 is kinda special to me, I spent time with Hupa Indians fishing on platforms on the Trinity River at the Ishi Pishi Falls. The hoop nets have improved, the platforms not so much.

54. Ishi Pishi Falls is in Karuk country on the Klamath River at Katimin
Edited on Thu Dec-30-10 03:43 PM by PufPuf23
by Somes Bar about a mile upstream from where the Salmon River enters the Klamath. To get to Ishi Pishi Falls from Hoopa, one drives on State Route 96 down the Trinity River then up the Klamath River from Weichipec (in Yurok territory) through Panamnik (Karuk) or about a 36 mile drive from Hoopa.

I graduated Hoopa High School (Hoopa the place, Hupa the people) 40 years ago and spent my childhood in Orleans (Panamnik); actually live at Tishanik, still active site of the World Renewal and White Deerskin Dance or pichi 'avich.

A searchable link of the entire Curtis Collection is in post #51.

Klamath, not the Trinity river. That may also explain the different hoop styles.

My memory is a little foggy as it happened over forty years ago.
