I think it was reasonable for people to expect cuts to be announced, considering what we were hearing from the media prior to his speech. Hell, I expected it. Some may have gone too far in saying that cuts would certainly be announced - but I do not believe they deliberately lied or were attempting to put words in the President's mouth.

Most of us really do want him to succeed, regardless of our criticism and doubt. There are reasons to be upset with this administration, reasons to be skeptical of what the President has to say.

This post though... reminds me of another that asked "who would admit to having egg on their faces?" I think Obama NOT announcing cuts to medicare/medicaid/social security programs came as a great relief to many of us.

Just to set the record straight... I expected him to announce those cuts. Though I don't recall saying as much. So, for the record... I WAS WRONG!

I respectfully disagree, after what our media did with Iraq this is NOT reasonable. Our media is a sloppy bunch of frat kids who praise the unprofessional amongst themselves trusting ANYTHING they say is disingenuous at this point.

You're right on about our media. Still, when we hear the same thing coming at us from many different angles, it is hard not to react.

There is bashing and there is criticism - it is not always easy to tell the difference. I've been upset enough with Obama in the past that I definitely said things that would qualify as bashing - regardless, I still think he's a good and decent human being. I have always wanted him to succeed as much as I want the democratic party overall to succeed.

Still, I am rather liberal and fairly often cynical and skeptical to the point of paranoia. That's just the way I am.

But I'm wrong a lot. I think we all are... I'll eat a little crow every now and then if it helps accomplish anything.

33. I've noticed Obama's biggest fans are incapable of separating speeches from reality.

What happened yesterday is called a "speech". That's a collection of words, targeted at a specific audience. The actual cuts have not been described yet.

Still, I personally never expected him to do anything on Social Security before the elections. He's not an idiot. To even bring it up yesterday surprised me.

35. I'm not getting my hopes up again.

I've been burned too many times by Obama's great speeches where he says the right things (even though I think some of the phrases he uses are dicey - they sound good, but leave a lot of wiggle room) but what he ends up doing is a far cry from he said.

I'll be thrilled if Obama finally backs up his speeches with action. I'd like nothing more than to see Obama get rid of his "let's all just get along" side and really turn into a fighter for those of us not in the upper 2 percent.
