2. loosely compacted fill soil saturated with water
will act like a fluid, and "flow". This probably only affects a small number of locations, and it is likely that this represents reclaimed land (land built out into bodies of water or swampy land).

This is not crisis level. Not on the scale of the other shit the country is going through.

6. Yup. The people standing there watching didn't seem all that
panicked, either. I think I heard some laughter, even, at the earth being extruded from under that driveway. Compared to the destruction by the tsunami, this isn't that alarming, really.

3. Liquification or Liquifaction?
They're either selling all of thier land and liquifying assets or they're about become one giant muddy puddle... big difference. ;)

Interesting to watch. Scary if you're there. The overstated panic on the part of the YouTube poster, though, was...well...overstated.

7. Here is some educational info on it:
Liquefaction is a phenomenon in which the strength and stiffness of a soil is reduced by earthquake shaking or other rapid loading. Liquefaction and related phenomena have been responsible for tremendous amounts of damage in historical earthquakes around the world.

Liquefaction occurs in saturated soils, that is, soils in which the space between individual particles is completely filled with water. This water exerts a pressure on the soil particles that influences how tightly the particles themselves are pressed together. Prior to an earthquake, the water pressure is relatively low. However, earthquake shaking can cause the water pressure to increase to the point where the soil particles can readily move with respect to each other.

When liquefaction occurs, the strength of the soil decreases and, the ability of a soil deposit to support foundations for buildings and bridges is reduced as seen in the photo (SC) of the overturned apartment complex buildings in Niigata in 1964.

sounds dangerous to me. I wouldn't want to go into any buildings.

Tsunami flood waters extended.

According to "Nova's" program on the Fukushima tsunami, the flood waters went as far as 17 miles inland, into areas where there are foothills and even mountains. Farming in some of those those valleys is now impossible, as permanent lakes have been created.

8. wow...that's like something from the days of the last New Madrid quake in the 1800's.
I read a book about that time(something like "When the Mississippi Ran Backwards")...whole houses just disappeared into the ground thanks to liquefaction. Yikes.

9. The panic in your post is clearly matched by the people in the video...
as they calmly step over, and even walk on, the shifting section of ground beneath them.
