AUSTIN, Texas — A U.S. Army recruiter kept his job after his supervisors learned that he was accused of sexually assaulting a prospective high school enlistee, police in Central Texas said.

The student reported the incident to Army officials after it happened but didn't go to police, Detective Michael Crumrine said. It isn't clear why the Army didn't alert police, he said.

Benavides remained in the Travis County jail Friday in lieu of $150,000 bail. An attorney was not yet listed for him.

The Army held an informal investigation. In a sworn statement Benavides said the girl "had a crush on him" and he denied ever being at her home.

During a police interview last month, Benavides initially denied being at her home but later admitted he had gone there but claimed he never touched the girl, the affidavit said.
