GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) -- Local efforts to recall Senators Dave Hansen and Robert Cowles are still going strong. Channel 5's Caroline Rowland has the story.

It's past the half way point for recalling Senators Dave Hansen and Robert Cowles, but those involved in collecting signatures are say their passion for the initiative has only grown.

"To have us not be the first group to turn it in, only makes us want to work harder," said Tom Seiber, volunteer for the Recall Robert Cowles Efforts.
............

"We are in it to win it, and we are going to put the resources and time we need to to make sure we succeed," said Dave Vanderleest of the Recall Dave Hansen Group.

The Recall Cowles Group will not release the number of signatures they have collected so far, but the recall Hansen group says they are halfway to the 13,852 required signatures, and hope to be all the way , by Tuesday, election day.

......................

The Government Accountability Board says recall groups can collect signatures at polling sites though they must stay 100 feet away from the building.
.

.................

The GAB says it is not against a state statute to pay someone to collect signatures or even to pay someone to sign a petition. The Democratic Party say they do not and will not pay canvassers, though outside groups may pay people to work on recall efforts.

While the Recall Hansen Group is hoping to be finished soon, The Recall Cowles Group says they will likely take until may second.

2. They already do...
an ad in Craigslist in Green Bay under part-time employment was offering fifty cents per signature. There are a lot of dirty tricks going on---canvassers don't explain what the petition is for---they often explain it as a petition to find out more about Dave Hansen. My daughter spent Tuesday (election day) holding a Decline to Sign poster and witnessed an elderly WWII vet walk up to the canvasser and demand to have his and his wife's signature removed. They had signed earlier and didn't understand what it was for. The canvasser very angrily said "fine" and proceeded to call him "senile." My daughter and her friend immediately approached the vet and asked him if he was okay. The vet, almost in tears, told them that he didn't fight in a war for this.

Another episode that afternoon involved a Hispanic canvasser who actually walked up to my daughter and asked her what he was supposed to be saying to people in order to get them to sign his petition. I'm guessing he had answered the ad on Craigslist and was just looking to make a little money.

And lastly, my daughter did have an opportunity to confront the man who heads up the Recall Dave Hansen campaign in Green Bay and told him about the disrespect shown toward the elderly veteran. He replied, "That must have been ______ (the petitioner's name)," apparently aware of her tactics.
