3. Ezra has got to be kidding!
Right now, the economy is weak. Giving into austerity will weaken it further, or at least delay recovery for longer. And if Obama does not get a recovery, then he will not be a successful president, no matter how hard he works to claim Boehner’s successes as his own. Clinton’s speeches were persuasive because the labor market did a lot of his talking for him. But when unemployment is stuck at eight percent, there’s no such thing as a great communicator.

From the person who said this:

Is the Fiscal Commission’s plan perfect? Not even close. But it’s a lot more reasonable, and a lot less ideological, than Ryan’s budget. And I think Ryan’s budget is going to persuade a lot of Democrats to give it a second look.

5. Prediction: Obama will come out with a statement that accepts blame for the shutdown.
I hope I'm wrong.

8. My guess is both sides want to hold off on details until after ths Sunday's talk shows . . .
. . . Then they can allow the details to trickle out over the course of the coming week, in the hope of lessening the reaction to the cuts.

13. The Shit Sandwich...
What should be done and what can be passed through a dysfunctional legislature is another story. You have two polarized parties that will give no quarter and any thought of compromise is immediately called a defeat and those attempting to negotiate as sell outs. So be it. As long as each side gets further apart the harder it will be for anything to move forward and I expect that we'll be back to this abyss game when the debt ceiling needs to be raised and then again in September with the 2012 budget. So while this shutdown was averted another will happen and then we'll find out how screwed up things can really be.

The byzantine rules of 60 votes in the Senate remain in force and with blue dogs like Mancin and Ben Nelson sitting as crucial votes the chance of anything progressive moving forward as nil. The House is totally lost its mind and when someone like Boner looks like a moderate you know it's only getting worse.

What we get is the points of least resistance...compromises that leave neither side satisfied and only sets up bigger walls down the road

16. I do agree with everything Ezra says, BUT: the numbers here are nothing
way too small for us to be talking about "austerity" in its real sense.
