Why do people always announce "putting you on ignore"?
Is that to try to get the "last" word or ? :eyes:

Seems 2nd (maybe 3rd) grade-ish... -(is that a word? gradeish? don't think so, but now it is :) )

1. They don't always.
I have a big Ignore list and I don't think I mentioned it more than once or twice.

If I want to ignore someone, I just do it.

And I don't use the ignore function, I can not read it on my own.

58. I disagree - and I think ignore is a great tool
Chances are you don't agree with everyone on this board

And chances are, some folks you might disagree with might start acting like spoiled, rotten toddlers

Just like keeping two preschoolers away from each other who keep getting into fights, the ignore function is used by the more mature of the two

66. This is true - however usually at the point when someone is about to be put on ignore
emotions are running high

In many cases the announcement is a sort of catharsis for the individual

But you're right - and announcing it really isn't for the person which its directed, but more for the person who puts them on ignore

Actually, because they are not mature enough to debate so they resort to, 'I am taking my ball and going home'

55. So when a monkey pisses on your leg...
Its best not to take your ball and go home but to hang around to see if the monkey might want to piss on your dry leg?

Seems you are saying that all discussions and debates are worthy and that just isn't so.

My list is long, I haven't the time to read drivel nor personal attacks nor stupidity.

Of course, it could be I am just not mature enough.

90. I had some one say ... "welcome to my ignore list" as if it was a party or someting.
The really funny part was the reason.

They misread my post, came to a totally wrong conclusion about my position (180 degrees off), and then put me on ignore.

To this date, I have not put anyone on ignore. Its silly.

i did once because i was in the middle of a fucked up conversation. every now and again that "ignored" shows up in a thread i'm reading.
the point is you only see it when it's announced. rest assured plenty of people are going on ignore who are not announced.

my favorite is the ones that blast you in a PM, then block your responses.

When it's really bad, they defect to a third-party website that bashes DU members and blast you from there. I have even noticed some current members of DU who do the same WITHOUT leaving DU. Is that against the rules? If not, should it be?

I sometimes note flame wars that look somewhat like this

ignored
I cannot believe you said that
ignored
now you are being even more ridiculous and insulting
ignored

and it goes on, with somebody clearly trying to argue logic to an isulting brick wall. Sometimes I wanna tell that person "yup, there is a reason I have that person on ignore"

but I also got inspired at least once, I was responding to somebody who had me on ignore, but I wrote a long and thoughtful post to her, and got the perfect reply (from another DUer) "what a great post". so the person who ignored me saw

ignored
what a great post

I noted, with some satisfaction, that she later took me off of ignore.

my favorite/wierdest - ASKING the admins to put you on forced, mutual ignore. WTF is that? You can't just ignore me on your own? And it was from two people I never had ANY problem with as far as I know.

I only have 3 ignores, I have never put anybody on, myself - the two just mentioned and another the admins probably wisely imposed on me, a person like you described. Flipped out in a PM announcing they were alerting on me, called me rude names and then blocked me.

If your utilities increased by 65% and some shmuck at the power company tried to tell you it was only a 13% increase, you'd freak because it would be a lie.

37. Exactly, but it might hurt someone's widdle feewings
so the not-so-subtle suggestion is not to make the ignore announcement.
IMO, say what you will and call the WAHmbulance on the responders who moan, wail, gnash their teeth, rend garments, etc.

To me, putting someone on ignore is called "clean-up". I don't come here to read about how great "tough love" is, flame-fests or Republican economic policy/free trade support. I can go to Yahoo or Facebook for that.

70. I "ignore" nobody - I can see the posts and still ignore them without that.
What would be the point of being on a message board and blocking the posts? If they made me that mad, I just wouldn't come here.

I *don't respond* to intentional lies and propaganda, or to people who are just posing or pot-stirring. That's MY policy. Just don't respond.

That lets those threads sink like a stone. Same thing with the posts... oftentimes a post without a response isn't noticed much. That's ignore, on a practical level.

I trust DUers to know what's bs without my having to spell it out for them.

If a post was THAT BAD, I'd alert before I would put someone on ignore.

But whatever, it doesn't bother me if other posters "ignore" or don't.

72. It's also an attempt at VENGEANCE OSTRACISM
It's not enough to spare oneself of one person's voice, the real need is to crush dissent, tar the person as unfit for decent society and hound them from the public square.

This is akin to calling someone a "racist" or a "sexist": a bit of rhetorical character assassination to obliterate the person and/or humiliate them into submission.

Personally, I feel that ignore is an idiotic bit of fantasy-sustaining: if one actually gives a damn about the covenant of society, one of its tent-poles is to honorably listen and be a part of the world in which one lives; to not do so is to put oneself above others and to sneer at the concept of being a part of actuality. Just barking one's own opinion and demanding allegiance to one's own presumption of what the group wants is selfish discord. If one wants to live in a fantasy land where only one's personal joy matters, that's an anti-social act and disjoint with what this community generally intends to be.

People rage that this is a place of refuge from the rancor of the outside world, but many of us also see that this is one of a few places to vent one's frustration with those who seek to dominate the non-conservative havens in this society. If they want to live in cloud-cuckooland, then that's fine, but to demand everyone else to respect their bliss as they piss on the desires of others is not a virtue.

It's not enough for some people to simply disagree; they must crush all opposition. Funny, but that's the kind of anti-pluralist fixation that more typifies the close-mindedness of conservatism.

Group Tyranny. Peer-pressure blown open.

Take it from one of the widely-ignored.

73. 2nd grade, definitely.
I told one person that it was the equivalent to sticking your fingers in your ears and closing your eyes...NYAH! NYAH!! LALALALALALALA!!! I can't hear you!! I believe it was last week when a few posters were bragging about how many people they had on ignore. Now, there's an accomplishment.

Honestly, I don't need to put someone on ignore. All I have to do is skip over the comment. Besides, you never know when one of those people might say something you agree with. As adults, we often disagree with one another, but it doesn't mean that we'll disagree all the time about everything.

Although...I'd love to have an ignore button for the entire right-wing. But, it would need to be more than just "ignore". Possibly, "Eradicate" would be more sufficient.
